Wow it's crazy after Ortio's good run last season pretty much everyone in CP predicted he is going to be the starter this season. Then early in this season on the game he played was awful and also not very good in the AHL that pretty much everyone is writing him off. I seem to remember correctly people wrote off Karri Ramo too when he got sent down early this season. Yes Ortio is having a bad season period but maybe with this callup his confidence gets better and get the Flames some wins. I hope to see him start next game and plays well.

CP tends to do that.

I still believe he has every tool to be a strong starter in the bigs.

Give him the reins, we already know Hiller can't get it done so what do we have to lose?

You can believe that but the evidence suggests that's not the case

I hope the guy can catch lightning in a bottle but the evidence suggests he is an AHL goalie. Consistency is an issue for sure. I think we are in for a steady diet of Hiller.

What evidence? His draft position? His nineteen NHL games? His age?

The fact of the matter is, he needs to have a chance to play for any reasonable evidence to come to light. Otherwise, there are simply sample size issues.

His career stats indicate he's unlikely to be an NHLer. He struggles to reach .9 in the minors and the farm team. Sure absolutely give him a chance. A few games won't bankrupt the franchise but in all likelihood his last games in the NHL will be this season.

Our other goalie has vertigo, so lol, we're screwed.

He's had chances. And he's been playing the AHL.
Nothing he's done this year suggests he is ready to be an NHL goaltender.
Nineteen NHL games is a helluva lot more than most goalie prospects will ever get.

I guess that is true. He has had a while to develop.
I'd still like to see him get more time, but you are right. Krahn only got one period. Szuper didn't get anything.

I want to break down his 19 games.

2015-2016: 4 games played. 2 in relief which totalled about a period - allowed no goals. 2 other games he started, which he was very bad in.

2014-2015: 6 games played. 1 games he was pulled - against Ducks. 1 against Jets when Flames iced an AHL team. The other 4 his save% was 0.950.

2013-2014: 9 games played. The year he came back from Finland. Flames were bad that year. Ended up picking 4th overall the following draft. He actually ended up winning 4 of those 9 games. He got pulled in his 9th game. The first 8 games he had a sv% of 0.903 - not terrible considering the circumstances.

So really in 19 games, 17 he started - record of 8-8, one no decision
5 he was bad in (you know these games)
7 he was great in (sv% in 900s)
5 he was average in (sv% in high 800s)

I'm indifferent to Ortio at this point. I don't think he will get another shot in Calgary but he hasn't been as bad as some people think. In his first year back in North America, he was 4-4, last year he was great except the Ducks game and the AHL finale. This year the whole franchise has been a mess, he was asked to come in after sitting on the bench for a month and turn it around when EVERYONE on the team was terrible, then benched again and then sent to the AHL with no confidence.

Hopefully Gillies gets a better treatment then this.

Huh? His career stats in the minors is a .910 save percentage including his worst season (this one). He's had stretches in the minors where he was arguably the best or at least one of the best goaltenders down there.

Consistency an issue? Maybe. But talent is not. Attention to details and technique are things that you hope build over time via repetition, coaching, and experience. If GMs pulled the plug on talent at every sign of issue, Steve Mason, Ben Bishop, Devin Dubnyk and Jakob Markstrom (among others) would not be starting goalies right now.

While I agree with you that he has not shown to be ready you might as well roll with him and see. We know what we got in Hiller and it isn't going to get us anywhere anyhow. Might as well give the goalie that could still have upside the starts.

I don't think that is the organizations approach. They will ice the team they think gives them chance to win.

It's pretty simple. Ortio has to be better than the veteran goalies in the NHL. He hasn't been so far.

Look at what Mrazek has done in Detroit - supplanted the veteran guy and stole the net. No choice but to play him.

The same Bob Hartley who just scratched Granlund again and played Nakladal 1:45?
Hiller will literally be dead for Ortio to have any chance.
As a matter of fact, Hiller probably has the "body of work" and will be declared the "undisputed starter".

Hartley has no clue whatsoever when he is dealing with more mediocre prospects.

Can't compare forward/defence to goalie it's totally not the same. Plus why would he change from last year when they called him up when Ramo was injured? He got to play a bunch and showed well, He only was sent back because Ramo was healthy again, this time around it looks to be of a more serious injury so I can't see Hiller being the only guy getting time especially the way he's playing....

That is kind of a telling come t don't you think? Mediocre prospects probably don't deserve a long look in the NHL unless they can prove otherwise.

His stretch of games last year had a could great ones, a couple ok ones and a couple bad ones. His career ahl stats are misleading because last year they were great and this year below average
