Just keep in mind that Brian Burke was the guy that brought Phaneuf into Toronto. Scary part is where Mr. Burke is now.

Burke doesn't make the trades here.

Still on pace for 40 points, plays top 4 minutes, has supposedly improved when Babcock took over. As bad as you think he is, trading him is not the opposite of tanking. They're definitely tanking.

I'll stop defending him now. Feels gross defending anything Leafs.

This must have expansion draft implications. It's the only way this makes sense.

Might also be why Flames are in no rush to rid themselves of bad contracts.

hmm

Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
If Toronto can get rid of Phaneuf, the Flames can get rid of Wideman, right?

My Phaneuf jersey that has been locked away the past 7 years actually becomes less ugly now that he isn't a leaf

Why is that scary? At the time, that trade looked like a steal for the Leafs.

Not only did Toronto rid themselves of the contract, they also freed up the captaincy for a certain someone this summer...

Sounds like they are going to pair Phaneuf with Ceci.

Senators have reportedly been looking for someone they could pair with him.

Thats a shame, I was hoping that contract and terrible play would handcuff them for years to come.

Phaneuf will be better on a more stable defense.

Karlsson, Methot, Ceci.

Also means he will be getting more favourable minutes which will help him.

However it is pretty telling that they were willing to send their captain to a bitter rival.

I like the trade from Ottawa's perspective.

As they aren't a cap team, they care more about actual salary. Phaneuf's contract was frontloaded so he'll be making closer to 6.5M a year than his 7M cap hit with the Sens.

The Sens needed at least another top 4 defenseman capable of playing 20 minutes a night. One capable of also putting up 35-45 points is going to cost at least 6M in free agency, if they even consider Ottawa. If they wanted any chance to do anything they needed to grab a top 4 defenseman, they got one in his 'prime' without giving up much of anything.

Toronto's made sense as well.

So is Phaneuf excited to be a Senator yet?
