How scary would this be? From a blog on wunderground...
I just received this email from user Adam Henderson: "My friend is stuck on I-10 and has just called me saying there is a 12 car pile up. His CB is buzzing with news that a 18 wheeler is involved." At this stage, it might be best not to try to evacuate. Being stuck in a traffic jam on I-10 when the winds start blowing 130 mph is probably more dangerous than riding out the storm in the Superdome.
From those live shots on CNN it does still look like there is traffic on the Highways out of NOLA. Cant be many worse places to be in a Cat 5 Hurricane then in a friggin car on the Highway.

Wow....I can't imagine. That is awful. Hope fully they would have the sense to maybe open the other side of the freeway? I imagine there won't be too many people coming INTO New Orleans....

From what I learned about New Orleans during my studies as a History Major (learned about the establishment of the city, the problems with creating stable infrastructure and the fact that it is located below sea level) I fear that they are in for a natural disaster of biblical proportions.
Unfortunately, it has just been a matter of time as they have been dodging the proverbial bullet for decades.
It is very possible that New Orleans could be rendered unlivable and unsalavageable.
It would be the modern day equivalent of Atlantis.

How about this for a warning you hope you never hear (from Miles O'Brien's blog on CNN):
"Mayor Ray Nagin told folks to make sure they fill their upstairs bathtubs with water, and in case of real trouble, make sure you have a way of hacking through your roof -- so you are not trapped by rising water."

Refineries, and I believe there are some offshore rigs in the area.

Dumb question of the day - why do they want people to fill up their upstairs bath tubs? Its probably really obvious but I'm missing it.

They say that if there's a tornado and you're in your car on the highway to go to the nearest highway overpass, get out and crawl right up to the top underneath the upper road.

I'm sure it's to drink, but reading from what happened last flood, the water rose so fast people trying to escape were trapped and drowned in their attic.
Hey would this happen to Amsterdam also? I've never been there but I'm guessing most of the city is below sea level also?

Actually, that is a myth.
"Another myth that I would like to get rid of is the "Get under a Bridge Myth". It is NOT SAFE to get up under an overpass to escape from a Tornado. Many have seen a video of a family with children, or a news crew, that got up under an overpass right as a Tornado went over them (it was only an F-0). They were very lucky. The winds formed by a Tornado, even an F-0 can be multiplied by the structure and the wind force underneath, can actually be greatly increased over what the same Tornado would be out in open ground."

Not most of the city, most of the country. However, they wisely built their city outside the reach of rogue hurricanes.
But if the global sea level rises Holland and Belgium will be two of many places in the world in trouble.

Before the worst of the storm? Or before the entire hurricane is done?
Worst of the storm probably 20 - 30 minutes.
Before the storm actually leaves and is done with Louisiana? 6 - 8 hours.

Alot of the land reclemation that is being implemented in south eastern Louisiana has been taken from Amsterdam, as yes, they are in the same boat.
