It must depend on the station, too. I've been to many that aren't even designed for you to park two feet too far forward or back, let alone get it to the opposite side of the car.

My gas buying strategy:
1. "Oh, I'm low on gas."
2. Pull into next gas station I come across.
3. Fill up.

It does feel like every car built in the last 10 years has the tank on the drivers side. When I pull out my old summer relic with gas on the passenger side I never deal with lineups.

Any Costco (which I was assume was the original reference) is designed to fill on either side from any pump. They all have signs indicating as such as well, IIRC.

Depends on the brand I think too. My GMC is on the drivers, Subaru is on the passenger. Same vintage.

Draping the hose over the car if you have the pump on the wrong side of the car. The hose isn't supposed to be used like the example in chemgears post.

As mentioned above costco pumps are made to reach. And the hose never touches my car. Perhaps if you drive a big truck or suv it may touch your vehicle.

Just to clarify, I've never actually been to a Costco gas bar to see their pumps. If the hoses are decelty longer, I an see them reaching further amd not touching.

I can also stretch hoses over my vehicle without it touching. I do it all the time.

You guys know theres a little arrow inside on the gas gauge to tell you which side the gas filler is on, right?
Maybe its just me but getting gas shouldnt be the ordeal some of you make it out to be.

Maybe you misinterpreted what people were saying. All I saw anyone saying was that they pull the hose over their vehicle so they can go in on the side with less cars. No one was saying they don't know which side their gas filler was on and mistakenly go to the wrong lane and then have to pull the hose over.
If anything I would say most people don't know there's an arrow on your gas gauge because most people would just look at their tank when they bought the car.

I'm pretty sure most people know which side their gas tank is on. Most just don't realize Costco pumps can accommodate both sides. I don't ever go to Costco since I don't have a membership, and Coop has roughly the same savings in dollar terms. Seems way too much of a clusterfata to bother with Costco TBQH.

Why even ask?

This was glossed over pretty quickly in favour of a Costco 'whose hose is longer' argument, but this was a rather elegant way for a former exec to say that the price of gas is detached from outside stimuli.
In true capitalist spirit, it is a commodity that is priced to what the consumer can bear. Due to the nature of our nation, and it's dependence on gasoline, it's up to our gov't to make sure that gouging is not taking place.

The consumer's demand for gas is pretty inelastic. I think pricing is much more strongly dictated by what the producer can bear.
I must say though, I was pretty surprised to fill up at a Petro Canada station yesterday for only $1.12. Assumed it would be much higher given the supply shortage.
