I would be rather put out if they touch the forward group, we have so many guys who are ready to play, that unless it is a move that also makes sense for the future it is downright silly to do it.
I'm torn on the defense. I along with many others agree that the top 6 could use and upgrade, but not at the expense of the future. I actually think a suitable upgrade is within the organization already. Their names are Wotherspoon and Potter.
I don't mind Smid and Engelland I think they are just fine depth defenseman, but they are like fish out of water in the Flames system. I don't think it is any coincidence that Diaz is starting to fit into the top six. He is still a #6 guy but his skill set fits much better in Hartley's system.
I would love to see how a Diaz\Wotherspoon pairing works. The third pairing already gets very sheltered minutes and still can't handle them, so there is no worry about that. If it works, run with it. If it doesn't, no harm done.
But then how do you tell two veterans (Smid\Engelland) One being a big free agent signing that they are now spare parts and won't be getting much playing time.
Its a tough one.
