Filing for the trademark this early is fine. If they start pouring out a ton of merchandise with it right away, it'll get tiresome quickly just like any other brand. I think it's fine as long as the use of the trademark is measured and has some correlation to Johnny's success. Nobody wants to buy a minor leaguer's t-shirt (not calling Johnny a minor leaguer, but you know what I mean).

Man, I just feel genuinely happy for his entire family. He seems so deserving of everything the universe is sending his way. As humble as you would want a man in his position, supportive family, and an all around underdog who has not only stepped up to, but completely owned every challenge in his way so far. I was skeptical, not so much that he would be effective in the show, but rather his timeline could be in the 2-3 year range to find his game. Even including the outlier first five games, his PPG is pretty incredible for a rookie (physical attributes aside, even).
As far as brand recognition.. My cousins boyfriend is a Leafs/Oilers fan, but kind of an all around hockey/stats nerd like me so the few times a year we run into each other we tend to bring up semi-obscure stuff. He seemed genuinely offended that Johnny didn't win the HB last year (turned out he followed the race as a friend of theirs, Archibald I believe, was included in the fan ballot). There was a legitimate respect for him as a player / person from his social circle, no Flames fans.
Look at all the Hall/Eberle/Nuge and efen to an extent Yak jerseys floating around haha (pretty sure fans got sick of buying every first overall jersey.. Just in time for a possible bust in Yak).
I think he will do just fine
Whoever mentioned the "skate the rainbow" marketing line, I can def see that being used

I don't think Wayner trademarked The Great One, but if you use that term most people will know who you are talking about.

Jackie Gleason was known as "The Great One" long before Wayne Gretzky appeared on the scene.

It was a no brainer to copyright Johnny Hockey. He came by that moniker honestly and organically, and it may one day be very lucrative branding. As for the skittles, it's a cute story of a dad enticing his two year old onto the rink. I hate the idea of it being exploited by an adult Johnny to make money by promoting junk food. And I'm sure Johnny and his family are way too classy to do that.

What's the story with Johnny and Skittles that everyone is talking about? Same thing as Marshawn Lynch and just eats them to get a little boost and it somehow caught on?
Is he allowed to eat them on the bench? I remember Chara (I think it was Chara) was told he wasn't allowed to drink Coke on the bench. Instead he had to put it into a waterbottle.
I wonder if Lynch has Beastmode trademarked.

Of course he does. Any smart business person would trademark the name (and Johnny hockey for that matter).

Just like wearing equipment as a precaution in hockey, I see this as protective gear in the business world.
If nothing else, it prevents unauthorized use of the moniker, with the legal weight to back it up.
What's to be unhappy about?

Lynch's mom used to give him skittles as a kid to get him up and going for games.
Funny enough if you watch really closely when he scores a touchdown while playing in Seattle there are skittles landing on the field.

McTlowe have already pulled all of their scouts off their minor league assignments to get working on it. (way do all this scouting when we can just pick a copy of the forecaster).

I sincerely hope he is an all star player, a top 5 producer in the league, in the running for a Conn Smythe and all the while he maintains his humble almost self deprecating personality. What makes Johnny one of my favorites is he is clearly one of the most talented hockey players around and he doesn't even know it. If only he would pass just a tiny bit less without letting the elite level of skill go to his head.

Last year I bought one of those "Johnny Hockey" BC t-shirts. How does this impact him? Will he have to stop selling those? I think the money was going to the university.

He can't. He has, and always will have, obvious obstacles. There is always a physical challenge and I appreciate that he approaches it constructively.
Fleury had a lot of aggression and this was part and parcel of him, based on many things including his upbringing and his other challenges, and ended up as anger that he channelled successfully, for a long while. Johnny seems to have a different kind of fight. I like it. He is not angry about his challenges.

I'm sure he's been approached by companies (most likely Flames too) wanting to work with him already, they wanted to use 'Johnny Hockey' in their marketing, asked if it was trademarked to protect their own butts, and this is a response to that. When you hear broadcasters and former Flames say they go out of their way to watch Calgary games specifically because of him you know he has something to offer and the money will soon flow.
He's got a great story. The underdog since he was young and is now in the big leagues. He comes from a decent family, works hard, and seems to be humble and appreciative for everything. From what we've seen so far he's going to be around for awhile and will no doubt be a marketing boon for the NHL, the Flames, and the city in general. He may as well make some money too because everyone else is going to want to.
