They would still suck, but at least it wouldn't be so ruinous on a freshly drafted rookie who can't keep up with the pace of the game.

I didn't contemplate the Oilers positioning themselves to have the option to keep Draisaitl in junior for another year because...Oilers. At least your line up makes Draisaitl have to beat out other players for a spot.

I still find it funny that they basically gave Draisaitl the 2C position, and I back that up with them trading away Gagner. They had and still have no back up plan, now they are screwed.

They're always still going to suck, its just a matter of sucking less and that list of centres is vastly superior to the quagmire of suck they're running with now.
And the best part of that lineup is that they could have had it for FREE. It would have cost them nothing!
They could even still have had Purcell because Tampa wanted to catapult him into the moon!

That gets you Dion Phaneuf.

True enough. MacT did point out Schultz is a future Norris candidate. Norris Schultz.

Probably a pretty consistent -4 every night

I honestly have no idea. Not a Webber package obviously. Eberle's stock has definitely fallen somewhat - is it a blip, a reflection of his surroundings that a healthy, winning environment could turnaround?
Is Schultz the young defenceman that has had his confidence shattered but could still be a Dan Boyle - type effective rover in the right setting?
I honestly don't know. They're dealing from a position of extreme weakness, and at the end of the day, the return likely doesn't matter. Whoever would come back the other way would just be ruined by this franchise anyway.

Wealth of talent, but softer then a down pillow, plus teams game plan for him now. He's a fairly easy guy to push to the outside.

Dan Boyle, not a chance, he can be the next MAB but with a much softer shot. He has terrible attention to detail and no defensive IQ whatsoever, and that's not going to change. He's like that defenseman in slot hockey with a broken spring and hes stuck in a position facing his goalie and he whips up in down his slot out of his players frustration until they throw the whole table away. Because the spring is broken.

At this point, anything that they get back is going to be far lower then fan expectations. But frankly they have to move some to shock the rest. The biggest fear is that the frustration boils over and some of these uber players go to management and demand to be moved. I can see that happening now that Eakins basically has a vote of confidence.

That's the challenge. They are probably both far better than they are currently showing.
However:
1) it's a risk and by no means a certainty that either one of them is going to be anything close to the player they were originally projected to be
2) they both carry cap hits that are more commensurate with their
potential than their current reality, and
3) the Oilers are trading from a position of weakness.
Honestly, if I were the Oilers, I would be thinking that the best I could do would be a swap of 'potential', along with having to eat some bad contracts.
For me, Phaneuf for those two would be a good trade but I think Toronto would still want more.

I think if Toronto had a chance to be rid of Dion and bring back Eberle and Schultz at the same time, Nonis would need to strap on a mansiere before sprinting down the hall to fax that trade to the league office.
Shultz is on a 1 year deal and you can ditch him of you think he's broken beyond repair. Eberle needs a change of scenery, and even though he hasn't produced as much in recent memory, he doesn't have the history of critical leg injuries Phaneuf does.

per Bob Stauffer, Erixon is available and the BJs are unlikely to move Anisimov until Dubinsky comes back from injury.

we should trade for Erixon just so we can lend him to a team somewhere horrible in the world....like Edmonton.
