CBA Question:
Can existing deals (the remaining two years for Gio) be renegotiated. (as part of a longer deal)
Can a deal be made that immediately raises the cap hit.
All that extra cap space can be leveraged for lower hit in future when (hopefully) we are competitive, young guys need raises, we add a UFA or two ?
If it can then get it done.

nope, deals can not be renegotiated and players can only be re-signed if their existing deal expires within a calendar year. So in Giordanos case, his deal expires on June 30 2016, meaning the Flames can re-sign him on July 1 2015 earliest.

I think Giordano is more in the latter category, Girardi, Bouwmeester etc.
There are 8 guys in the league that make more than 6.5 in a season, and they all produce points. There are only 3 guys in the top 15 paid defenders who are older than 30. I don't think it's unrealistic to give Giordano a 50% raise on a 3 year deal.

He was one of the higher scoring defenseman last year in PPG. Early this year, but he's at 1 PPG this year.

To say he "doesn't owe anything to the Calgary Flames" is nonsense, Ashasx.

What does he "owe" the flames????
It starts with at least a 7, maybe an 8.

Unless he suffers a major injury it's going to take a lot to get him re-signed, especially since he's been playing for much less than he deserves.
Start at 7X7 and go from there. If the Flames aren't paying it some other team surely will.

7x7? You do realize that will keep him under contract until he's 40 years old, right? That would be a terrible contract by the last few years.

Yup, look at the last UFA contracts given to defensemen. Brooks Orpik got 5 years at $5.5M and that will take him until he's 39.
The cap will keep going up and a Norris-calibre D comes on the open market. Giordano is going to get paid.

He doesn't owe anything to Calgary, just as if he sucked Calgary wouldn't "owe" him anything. Perfect scenario is that the Flames are competitive next year, with a free agent add, a trade or two, and Bennett, Monahan, Gaudreau all playing well. That way he might be inclined to take a "discount" if he thinks the Flames are a contender over the term of the new deal.

The Brooks Orpik deal at 5x5.5 set the market for middling physical defensive defenseman. How much more valuable is Gio? He's got leadership, offense, defense and durability over Orpik.
I'll reiterate: It starts with at least a 7, maybe an 8

Certainly could start with a 7 or 8, but I do think it would be more like a 4-5 year term, max.

The way I look at it is Gio has been underpaid by about 3 million per year for the last 3 years. I think he's worth about 7.5 per year right now. So to make it up to him, Calgary owes Gio about 6 extra. Over a 5 year contract, I would do 10M + 10M + 10M + 7.5M + 6.
That seems most fair to both the team and Giordano.

Assuming no significant injuries, my guess is that the Flames will re-sign Giordano to a 6-year extension for $49.5 million prior to the 2015/2016 season:
$49.5 mil ÷ 6 seasons = $8.25 mil AAV / cap hit

I think given his age a 3-4 year deal for Gio makes the most sense for both sides. Give him 4X7 IMO, he's earned those figures and he will still be a good player 4 years from today with us getting his prime years over the next 2-3. Honestly at this point though it's whatever it takes to get him locked up here, we are good cap wise so $'s really aren't an issue for us.

Makes no sense for Gio to sign a 3-4 year deal as he holds all the leverage. This will be his last big contract so he'll want the max number of years he can get. If the Flames don't want to go for the extra years, he'll go to a team that will. I'm guessing he'll sign for 7 years at $55M...just a shade under $8M per season.

That's my guess too. For people saying he'd sign a 4 year deal, explain why you think he would do that?

Gio knows this is likely his last chance to cash in and because of that I'm sure he's gonna want as much term as he can get.

7 years takes him to 40 and there are so many contracts like that now in the league that end up being a regret for the team that signs them. I think Gio wants to be a Flame till his career finishes, if we add more dollars to lower the term I think he'd be happy to sign it. Even 4X8 seems fair but the minute you start throwing in 7-8 year deals for a soon to be 34 year old it makes me weary of wanting to do the deal. It'll be interesting to see how the Flames brass handle this signing.

They're not going to let him walk. The contract will be inked on his terms, and players normally want the best mix of term and dollars.
