Spector weighs in:

Not hanging Oilers here. They lose nothing, and obviously, with agent, failed to spot an obscure CBA subsection. Tough for kid though
|
Yes, an 'obscure' CBA subsection. So that's it? Don't the Oilers have somebody in the organization that should actually read and be knowledgeable on the CBA?
Of course you hang the Oilers........no due diligence, they screwed up. Amateur hour.

Tkachev fiasco inexcusable. Somebody in every NHL front office is drawing six figures to know EVERY clause, section and word of CBA.

Yup the Oilers have an assistant GM who's only responsibility is to know the CBA.
read his job description for yourself:

There's an example of this mistake just last season.

Didn't Nabokov end up with the Islanders due to the same clause?
Signed with Detroit, but because he had played overseas he had to clear waivers and NYI snagged him.

I'm sure if you ask Mike Gillis he knew all about this ahead of time.

That's really bad on Edmonton's end.
They have a guy making some big bucks on their staff that should have figured this out. They more or less show cased him for the league... Someone with a spare 3rd or 4th could easily snag this kid next year at the draft. The oil will have to use a pick to get him now, that's horrid... Considering this is suppose to be an incredibly deep draft.

Frak. The O'Reilly fiasco helped bring a massive change to our management structure... this could very well happen up north.
Since Katz is the owner, there is still hope that not much will change...

not exactly Nabakov was an UFA
the problem with the RoR fiasco was over the ambiguity in how the NHL phrased a new rule that allowed teams to sign RFAs who played overseas after the season started

Mudcrutch's initial dazzling Powerpoint presentation to MacT and the others in management, with cool fonts and bright colors, presenting his infamous obscure stats presented in a tasty format, had them dialing the phone and drawing up the contract on the spot.
