I think Max is ready. My feeling is we put Johnny in the AHL first and Max with the Flames, and Johnny will prove Burke/Treliving why he is NHL ready.

There's a whole other thread on this topic. But it probably belongs here too

Given where they're situated personnel wise I think they should be okay.
First of all, Jeff Petry is 26. Unless they stupidly let him walk, they have one top 4 guy there for a few years. Notwithstanding bias against the Oilers, Petry actually doesn't suck in that role. He's not great, but he doesn't suck. So they need 3 top 4 guys. One of those is Schultz, if he sticks around. I don't like him very much, but he's a 2nd pairing offensive defenseman and is 23, so has room to grow. Now they need 2 more. One is Nurse two years from now, you'd hope, and the other may be Klefbom or Marincin, 20 and 22 respectively. Presumably, Nikitin and Ference are around to bridge the gap while those three guys transition into full time NHL players - though depending on what you think of Nikitin, that might be a pretty poor strategy.
It's honestly a much better position to be in in terms of defenders than a lot of NHL teams. The problem is they lack that clear cut top 2 defenseman, which is why there's no chance they pass on Ekblad who obviously projects to be a top pairing guy (to the extent you can predict defensemen).
Just my opinion.

I wouldn't call that very good.
|
I think they see Nurse as a probable top pairing guy and perhaps not a huge step down from Ekblad. Then they have Marincin, Schultz, Petry and Klefbom as potential top 4 guys with some other guys for bottom pairing depth. If one of the aformentioned 4 can surprise as a top pairing guy like Brodie did then they look fine going forward.
They really do think they have good young defensive depth. They aren't wrong IMO. I'd say their need for a big 2nd line centre or a big, strong powerforward is much, much greater than their need for another top pairing d-man prospect.
It's quite easy to see them coveting Draisaitl or even a guy like Ritchie because they fit a bigger need.

I'll take Sam Reinhart @4 because Mrs Reinhaart is a looker and this is the internet.
Otherwise, I have no preference between the consensus top 4. If the Flames can swing another 1st rounder, Nylander and Virtanen would be cool too.

Why is it that every other day the Fan starts hockey coverage at noon, but today, on DRAFT day with rumours and trades flying out the wazoo, they decide to air the third hour of Jim Rome?
What a bunch of ####.

Even more frustrating, we haven't even had ANY hockey talk in the noon hour. for some reason the Fan960 decided to go back to making us listen to the BlueJaysCentral show in Toronto from 12:00-1:00 all week (maybe even longer, not sure when it switched back)
PS....they always air the full 3 hrs of Rome when it is the Smack-Off.

NHL Draft Day in Calgary >>>>>> The Smack-Off
Oh, but a contest to see who can sound like the biggest idiot over the phone while Jim Rome sits around and repeats himself between unnecessarily long pauses, because he has nothing actually interesting to contribute? Who wants to miss that.

Oh God...don't say that. I'm not home yet, but when I turn on that TV at 5:00, TSN HD better be working...or there will be hell to pay!

Yah, TSN and various other channels have been off the air all day. Then when it comes on it is in standard definition. Called Shaw only to get a recording that says they are aware of the problem and attempting to fix it.

During trade deadline day Shaw had the same issues. Think it's time to switch. This is getting ridiculous. Obviously they can't handle this many people watching the same channel, at the same time. This has to be what is causing the issues.
And this is during the day. Wait until everyone gets home from work and tunes in for the draft.
