Obscure stats? +13 - 1???? This is very straight-forward.
How could Backlund have done any better given his ice time?
People expect him to produce from the 4th line and 8 minutes a night?

I think they want Backlund as a 2nd line center going forward. Nothing that he has done this year has shown he is a 2nd line center. He needs to pick it up, the job is his to lose. I don't see the Flames wanting him as a 3rd line center going forward.
|
Then they should stop playing him as such....
He sits ninth on the team in PP/TOI amongst forwards, and is being primarily used in defensive zone situations at even strength. Opportunity is everything at the NHL level, and Backlund is simply not getting a fair shake on the offensive side of the rink.
Prior to this game..
Offensive Zone Starts
Joe Colborne - 65%
Sean Monahan - 58.5%
Matt Stajan - 53.8%
-
-
-
Mikael Backlund - 41%

Joey MacDonald's save % tonight - .818.
The Flames next objective HAS to be finding a goalie who can make saves while the team plays an offensive style.
Even having a guy at .900 tonight would have sealed the win.

Ignoring Ashax is rendered much less effective when his frothing remarks get quoted and argued multiple times in a thread. Just sayin' there is a simpler solution, cp.

I don't. He's fine for this year's team. If he's gone next year I'm fine with that but somebody has to play this year and he's the team's 5th best defenseman.

If you are to play him in those situations you have to take the good with the bad. For the most part tonight I though he handled the likes of Datsyuk and Zetterberg wonderfully.
|
People keep defending his plays with comments like this, you know we have a goaltender in the same position yet people here won't give him the same benefits. You realize that his play so far this season requires improvement, the bad games and plays out number the good. You can blame some of this on his partner but ultimately this is the NHL and he is getting paid to play at a higher level, period.. No more excuses over the situation he is in, there are other kids who would love a crack at his full time position.

I have been very supportive of the team's management these last 3 seasons. I'm not getting fooled any longer. I'm not afraid to speak up.

Man, I get your point, I really do. Backlund isn't a project, nor is he young anymore. Stajan needs to be moved, that's the correct solution.

And if his play was better, i bet he would be getting a better %. Posters will complain about almost everything. If Backlund gets more offensive zone starts then there is a good chance Monahan % would be lower and posters would be all over that.

The extra spaces between aren't necessary. He's 4th but not by a vast margin.

He's been better recently but he was brutal to start the year.

All the defenseman on this team have taken their turns for the most part. In fact I'm really disappointed in Wideman. He's been horrible on the power play and that's the main reason he's been added to this team. This team needs him to be better if the PP is ever going to get back on track.

I'm not Hartley and I'm not going to pretend I know better than an NHL coach. But from a fan perspective Backlund's diminished ice time is just baffling.
Last season Backlund was easily one of the strongest Flames throughout the shorten season. He was playing a strong defensive game, driving hard to the net and creating opportunities. The Flames organization was openly impressed with his play and he was carrying that over to this season.
Sure Backlund has struggled over the past 3-4 games, but in the context of where Backlund is development wise and where the team is headed, does Backlund deserve 4th line minutes. I'm not sold on it. Colbourne has played well since arriving in Calgary and there is a bit of chemistry between him and Cammalleri, but it's not like Colbourne is pulling a Monohan and suddenly leading the team in scoring. I don't see why Hartley doesn't give Backlund some time with Cammalleri to shake things up a bit.
I think the frustration with Backlund's ice time is that he's pinned between Bouma and Gratton for the entire game, if you want him to be show that offensive flare give him a couple of shifts with one of the other lines.

This is the same team that gave up on Savard and St. Louis. And while I understand that this is obviously a completely different management/coaching group, every single poster would undo these mistakes of the past (yes, hindsight is 20/20, but let's learn from these errors).
What we're doing with Backlund is a mistake. I don't want to see the past repeat itself.

Give it a rest and take a break away for a while. If you start be-atching because a player gets excited or scoring a goal in the last minute with the oalie pulled, you have lost all perspective.

What stats? Career high 25 point season? He has never, ever broke out offensively and I don't think he ever will.

Yes he is, 41% is a very low ZS percentage.
