But he's not a great pick.
Agree 100% -- I was terrified that the Flames would take him, with Feaster intoning something about "size and character." Less than a point a game in the OHL? That's not going to be a top-6 player on a quality team, and that's not enough for someone who's been an elite goaltender 2 years in a row.

glad we missed on that one....would have to assume Van was looking at getting the 6 from us...

So unless something changes NJ won't make a 1st round pick for the next 2 years... 2014 pick is forfeited because of Kovalchuk

I think the trade would have been disappointing for Van even if they DID use the opportunity to take a top 5 talent in Nichuskin. They didn't. Lou fleeces Gillis here and given his epic mishandling of the whole situation Gillis should be out the door in Vancouver. Just an epic fail.

I'm glad that the Flames were in on Schneider as I think he can be an elite goalie for at least another 6 years, but I'm sure the asking price was ridiculous.

Luongo's realtor tells me his Vancouver condo, listed for $4.2 million, has not sold. So he's got that going for him. #Canucks #nhldraft

LeBrun says CBus was the 4th team

so once they dropped out it was in division or the devils

glad Gills chose the Devils

I imagine the discussions with CGY / EDM would've been the first rounder plus a good prospect (not Sven but maybe Brossoit or Johnny)

On the plus side for the Flames they don't have to play against Schneider who I think will be a top 10 goalie in the league for the next 6 years at least.

I guess it's an okay deal for the Canucks, but I don't see how it improves them in the next couple of years. I still think they gave up two good years that they could have won, and now have acquired a player who won't help them until their current group are no longer able to be the guys carrying the load. Might help them be a playoff type team for a couple extra years, but the no cup jokes will live for a few more years.

I actually don't know about this. Horvat's like 215lbs, isn't he? He's reportedly quite mature. The Canucks have no third line centre. I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see him compete for a roster spot in training camp, and put him on the track Ryan Kesler was on (he played bottom 6 for his first couple of years).

EDIT: Nevermind, 205, read it wrong. Still, he has the size to play with men.

I wonder how Luongo feels right now. He clearly wanted out and wasn't informed of this deal.

Based on @LOLVancouver's re-tweets, Canuck fans are not taking the fact that Schneider wasn't worth what they were expecting very well.

aren't we supposed to have the two best goalies outside of the NHL in Ramo and Berra? Add in Broissant and Ortio, and it seems like a position that was overstocked... or oversold.

Glad we picked Monahan.

I like the Horvat pick, but they should have gotten Jon Merril or Urbom as well...

I think that's a pretty good return for a goaltender that isn't 100% proven and has backstopped a team that has benefitted from playing in the worst division in hockey for years now. I tend to think that playing behind the Canucks defense will improve most goaltenders numbers.

Unless he wants to be put on waivers. Because he has absolutely ZERO trade value. The canucks will prob have to give up Horvat to dump Luigi. hahahahaha
