So that means there are about 60 goalies better than him. LOL
The fact that in the middle of trade season Feaster would prioritize this tells me everything I need to know about the Flames.

Getting goalies from across the pond is a valid strategic route to go.
So, I apologize if I come off as a brash, but I find your negative view on this topic to be without clear thought or valid reason.
The fact that you qualify him as a backup in the Swiss B league shows your facts are off. He hasn't played in the Swiss B league since 2007.

#1 Goaltender

I really don't know enough about goaltenders to bash this move. I don't think anybody does really, it is very hard to predict how good goaltenders are going to be and the Flames' strategy is clearly a reflection of this.
But from a glance, his numbers really don't seem that impressive compared to Ramo's. I guess we will see

Two goalies that played overseas previous to this season that have had quite good seasons so far:
- Victor Fasth: 2.13 GAA, 0.924 SV% in 17GP
- Cristopher Nilstorp: His AHL numbers are 2.27 GAA, 0.909 SV%. Not as great NHL numbers.
Not too bad for recent examples.
My guess for next season's goalie situation:
Flames - Ramo, Berra (unless Taylor comes into training camp and destroys everyone).
Heat - Taylor, Brossoit (off-chance Irving stays).

I think you have to keep MacDonald, as we have no idea how Ramo/Berra will perform at all. MacDonald isn't spectacular, but he's steady and a good short term bandaid solution.
I see it as:
Flames - MacDonald, Ramo/Berra
AHL: Berra/Ramo, Brossoit
Irving and Taylor let go

What a waste of a contract... Berra puts up average numbers in the Swiss-A league! Has Feaster officially lost his mind?

and Kipper was a third string goalie for the Sharks at one stage.
I'm not sure why people are so against teams taking such minor risks as a friggin' contract spot.

2-way
Zero risk here.

Is it not possible that Berra`s numbers suffer for the same reasons that everyone brings up to defend Kiprusoff.

Berra is 26 and has no track record in any league of being a future NHLer. I'd rather give contracts to 20 year old FAs than chase 26 year old never-beens around. This move makes no sense, we have three goalie prospects in our system that are way better than him...

Which 3 goalies in our system are better than Berra and please explain how.
You seriously cannot be talking about Brossoit, Ortio or Gillies.

So I guess Berra has never had a decent defense in front of him, eh? Kiprusoff has been terrible this year, I make no excuses for him.

Taylor is a very very good AHL goalie. I'd even say an elite AHL goalie. I think he'd be an awesome teacher for Laurent.

I would drop MacDonald, Irving and Brust. Sign Taylor to a 1 year 2-way deal. Since the Flames are rebuilding we should give Taylor one more a chance in order to determine if he's an NHL goalie or not. Signing MacDonald will just result in restricting the development of our younger goalies.
I would start the season hoping that Ramo and Berra are the top 2 guys. If one of them turn out to be a dud (odds are probably high) then call up Taylor.
Can Brossoit play in the AHL next season? If yes then get him sign and put him with Taylor on the farm next season. If he has to stay in junior then maybe bring over Ortio again for another crack in the AHL.
I'm hoping Gillies plays one more year in the NCAA and then turns pro for the 2014-15 season. I have high hopes for Gillies, I think he will be the #1 goalie for the Flames when they turn it around from this rebuild. I am luke warm on Brossoit and Ortio.

I don't see the fuss here, seems like a low-risk, high potential reward to me. Exactly the type of moves this franchise needs to be making to get back into contention.

Neither did Fasth, or Backstrom, Thomas or Hiller at one time.
Goalies are a crapshoot. The more you have in your system, the better chance you have.
