I would definitely say that anyone thinking about buying Android should wait a few weeks to see what comes out. HTC Vigor, Moto Droid Razr, and the Nexus Prime all could be announced in the next few weeks.
I was not at all surprised that they only released a 4GS today everything out of Apple seemed to hint at that, and the real iPhone 5 hype was all built by the media.
In the U.S. the carriers lock you into 2 year contracts, this is why it appears Apple will go with a all new launch every two years while releasing an upgrade to the device in the off year. Just my two cents.
I'm fairly disappointed, but that's because of the all the media hype/supposed leaks, etc.
I really thought the new form factor iPhone 5 would be hitting today. I just finished my 3-year contract with my iPhone 3G and I've been waiting to upgrade, but I didn't like the iPhone4.
I bought a 3GS like 18 months ago and at the time it was the latest and greatest. If Apple were to basically force people to buy new phones every 18 months at the full early adopter price in order to get the latest operating system I'd cease to be an Apple customer.
Apple doesn't force people to buy new phones, they just cease to give older phones the newest features (which is why I'm shocked 3GS is still getting support). It's not as though one day you'd wake up and your 3GS would totally be bricked.
This isn't a practice exclusive to Apple. If Apple did lose you as a customer though where would you go to get a different treatment? Android updates only being available on certain models isn't going away, and Blackberry is... well... Blackberry.
Just for those who are disappointed and will wait for the 5... what features are you looking for exactly?
Funny how Apple can get away with things like no HSPA+ but it's okay because iSheep will still flock to buy this phone. The only thing I'd like to see in the next phone is a bigger screen. 3.5" is getting old real quick.
Not that I'm interested in a new phone, i love my iPhone 4, but that was pretty much the only feature that interested me today.
Yup looks like Canada may not be included in the BETA.
Surprising considering it was the main focus during the 4S presentation today and that makes the only real improvements the Camera and Processor.
Athough as one blogger put it "Siri is by far the coolest feature that I will never use". While it's a great tool in theory its one of those things you never really use.
It will be interesting to see what Samsung/Google announce at their conference this week and if they could actually gain some ground on Apple.
Looks like many of the pundits were not overly impressed with this release and Google may be able to make a splash if the rumored Nexus Prime/Ice Cream Sandwich live up to expectations.

I was hoping for increased capacity and/or bluetooth capability on the iPod Nano, so I'm a little disappointed with today's announcements.

4S is fine for people who are already looking to upgrade from a 3G or Blackberry, but Apple is really missing out on those hardcore types that would have paid $600 for a 5.
Wait, those hardcore people aren't going to pay $600 when the 5 is announced and released next year then? I'm not sure how they missed out other than on a temporary shift in revenue in the short term.
It's interesting that there is a bit of a "meh" sentiment hanging over this release. Every single aspect of this phone except the case is new:
- New OS w/significant new functionality (Siri)
- New CPU
- New GPU
- New wireless chipset/antenna system
- New Camera incl 1080p video and hardware image stabilization
- 2x storage available vs the 4 (64 GB)
And yet, a not-insignificant number of people aren't super excited. Would Apple have been better off to take all this stuff and shove it in a new case just for the sake of a new case? Maybe..

Personally I think the 4 form factor is the nicest out of any phone. I'm not sure how Apple could improve on it that wouldn't be a step backward.
the screen is pretty small compared to the top Android phones. when i compared my SGS2 to my buddy's iPhone 4 it dwarfed it, yet mine isn't uncomfortably large or bulky. i imagine that will be the big change for the iphone 5 along with HSPA+/LTE

I'm not too worried about screen size, I don't watch many videos on my phone. Lately new jeans I buy have that little knife pocket enlarged enough that I can fit the phone in there, if the screen was much larger I'm not sure it would fit. It allows me to skip having a case/screen protector on the phone, since nothing but the phone goes in that pocket.

Until you drop it and the entire phone shatters because it's made of glass. I'm tired of seeing stupid girls at the bar drop their phone and it shatters into a trillion pieces. Herein lies the advantage of the GS II, not only is it lighter than the phone despite the screen being much larger, but upon being dropped it will always reliably break into 3 pieces: battery, back cover, and the phone itself. Snap them back together and you're good to go.
The only thing worth a damn in this new iPhone is the image stabilization. Curious to see how well it works.
The screen still has higher pixel density than anything Android has to offer, but I suspect that will change shortly. However, I also predicted that after the iPhone4 was released, and I was most definitely wrong.
So basically, iTunes, the Retina display, and one heck of a phone camera, would be my 3 biggest reasons for someone to pick an iPhone over Android right now.
