Something is wrong with this. Your odds increase by a miniscule amount, they don't get cut by a third. The true odds are 1:85M for each set of numbers. I wish I was better at math.
How about this one;
If you buy a ticket in the home lotto, where they sell say 5000 tickets, what are your odds of winning one of the 500 prizes? 1:10 like they advertise? or 1:5000 for the first drawing, 1:4999 for the second, 1:4998 for the third, etc. Your odds are never truely 1:10.
Or do I need to go back to grade 5? lol

As for the suddenly friendly family members and old friends that came out, I'd have no problem telling them to **** off. And while we're on that subject I don't think I'd ever go up to one of my family members or friends and ask them for money if they won the lotto.

Yea, i would be doing burnouts 24/7. I wouldnt even care, i would just buy a car that didnt even drive but just did burnouts all the time. Id be burning out driving down deerfoot at 100km/h just burning my tires.

You can think of it as your odds of winning with each numbers you have as being reduced by the odds of you winning with any of your other numbers. The effect is negligible, meaning if you buy 10 times as many tickets, you have very, very close to 10 times the odds of winning.

TY, I found a decent explanation online, the 'odds' improve as stated, but although it looks so much better you still have next to 0% chance of winning.
1:85M = 1.5e-8% chance
1:28M = 3.4e-8% chance.
So you're saying there's a chance!

I read this and checked my numbers; I had already checked for the $50M last night. I had the first 3 right; and was close on the 4th number. For a split second there I thought I might have won.
At least I won $20 again on another ticket; so next week will be free again for me again.

If I buy a ticket, I really do enjoy planning out for a while what I would spend the money on, so even though I have no chance it its't really a 100% waste.
If I won, I would still live in Calgary, still keep working in the short term and still go to school. Actually, I would probably donate a huge chunk of cash to where I work (non-profit organization) for them to use for IT stuff (no more P3 - 800MHz Desktop PCs!), once I had that all set up, I would quit my job and finish my degree. Then I would probably continue on to get a PhD and do research for the rest of my life.

Depends on your job and your employer. There was a guy who won something like $25m but still worked, drove his 86 honda accord to work everyday and continued renting his 450sqft apartment. He told himself that if he won he would not spend a penny for a year to make sure he was making the right choices. I don't think I could do it, I'd be Sheenin' it up, but in Rathji's case I could understand it being a non-profit organization and all.
