It looks bad losing a 3rd for what we got out of him, but I think a big part of that is colored by the shortened season and lack of playoffs results.

We didn’t win the cup. Every move we’ve ever made since 2005 has not been palatable for the mass of CP.

He's a very good player who would undoubtedly help the Flames. The problem with him is his age paired with the cap hit and length of his contract.
If he was two years younger or his contract was 2 years shorter or $2 million cheaper, people here would have a different viewpoint (I think).

I think OEL is a very good player but I am concerned that he comes from a losing program (Beyond $ and contract length). I could be mistaken and I certainly don't work in hockey but I believe that counts for something. Back in the 1980’s the Flames traded for Risebrough specifically because he came from a history within a winning program. I believe thats worth something given that the Flames need to take the next step from being a playoff qualifying team to a playoff winning team. The Flames IMO are dont bring in enough assets from winning programs.

I believe you're right. I've said the same thing myself in other threads. It's not really the player that's unlikeable (although he can be rough in his own zone from time to time), it's the contract. I also think that he's been held down a bit playing for that team for so long. If he can get 40 pts a year down there, surely he can do better up here.

If Lucic goes the other way i think you do that trade. Plus you still might have room for Hall. If we can add OEL, Kuemper, and Hall this offseason that would really make our team better.

Yes yes it all sounds glorious for a season, but it’s the next 6-7 that freak me out. That contract anchors that player. It’s too bad, I hate when a good player ends up being a disappointment/whipping boy because of a stupid contract. Like Dions in Toronto. So dumb. Could have been a longtime Leaf and lived out a decent career. But that contract was dumb and it makes a player unwelcome.

Good point. If you add OEL and Hall, you are really hitching your long term success to those two players and their contracts.
At best, that's risky. I'd say it's worse than that.

Gustafsson was definitely the best PP quarterback they've had in a while but he is bad everywhere else

PP1 looked significantly better with him on it. On one hand, you'd like him back. On the other hand, isn't it time we started thinking about sacrificing next season to recoup picks?

1 or 2 years at 2-3m - is that what a PP specialist is worth?

Taking a while to get to 5000

The problem being, Gustafsson doesn't see himself as just that.

And the problem for Gustafsson is that, if all the GMs do see him that way, he has little to say about it

Pretty much.
The Flames exchanged numbers with him and apparently his ask was much higher than they thought. He'll stick to his guns I would imagine until, like you said, GMs by and large offer him under $4M and he'll settle. Just won't be here.

Seems about right. And it is a skill the Flames could use.
The adage used to be that special teams won you playoff games, because 5on5 scoring was so hard to come by. Which should make a player like Gus more valuable.
But it's also why you see forwards back at the point on the PP. Why use up one of your 6 D spots on a guy who can't really defend.

Edmundson may be signing a 2 year at/around 3.75M. If that rumour proves out, that right there shows Gus hitting 3.75-4.5M on a short term deal in my eyes.

Players have different number for different teams.
A lot of guys don't want to play in Calgary but they will if the money is Right.

We can probably sign someone like Schultz for much cheaper and have a PP guy. Besides, Andersson needs some powwrplay time too.
I dont think Gus will be worth signing at the end of the day.
But, I do understand why the traded for him. Someone to help manage Gios minutes better for a run, untimely injuries shifted their focus from finding that Toffoli type trade to securing defensive depth. Which sucked from my perspective but I get it.
It helped when things got rolling again.

It's Treliving's MO to give away a 3rd round for a rental 3rd pairing defenseman every year the Flames look like they'll make the playoffs. And a 2nd every season or two for a journeyman stop-gap goalie.

Meh - him, Forbort, and Hanifin - Meh. Time to really look for gritty depth on the D, epsecially on the right hand shot D-man, if they can find one.
