Would be nice to get something concrete instead of just speculation for sure.

Well, I’m not a scout nor do I get paid to cover the NHL or its prospects. That said, I am a fan and pay as much attention as I can.

From what I’ve read and listened to there is a drop after 12-ish. That’s not to say there are not players of value that can and will follow 15OA, there are in every draft. Is it a ‘huge’ drop? Depends what we’re talking about really, but I think it’s fair to say that the players with the surest top 2 line/top two pair potential are in that 15th overall and lower range. When 28OA is talked about based on what I listen to the guys who cover these things seems to suggest it’s basically taking a flyer on a number of guys. If Tij Iginla or Carter Yakumcuk is available at, say, 10, I would have to say it’s highly likely that is a better prospect than the players that will be available at 28.

I was trying to come up with a trade that landed the Flames the 7th pick but allowed them to keep 9. Not sure if Ottawa does this?

To Sens: Markstrom (33% retained)+ Mangiapane (50% retained) + 28th overall + 41st overall
To Flames: Korpisalo (4x4 remaining) + Joseph (2x2.9 remaining) +7th overall

The Sens get the goalie they are after and come out of this deal cap neutral. Mangiapane retained makes the same as Joseph and expires this year instead of next and they get Marky at $4M and dump Korpisalo fully. They get the Vancouver 1st and Flames 2nd. Flames get the 7th overall pick by retaining on 2 players, eating a couple of overpriced contracts and giving up a late 1st and early 2nd.

Another trade I thought about:

Markstrom+9+28
For
7+25+Brannstrom

Ottawa doesn’t really have the cap to make that work unless dumping bodies elsewhere.

Lots of people getting very upset about this trade not happening and how the value will be garbage for various reasons regarding Markstrom's value. I'd ask you take into consideration that Markstrom hates this speculation more than any of us and he's the only one being impacted by this. Don't stress!

1. Markstrom wants to play for a contender, preferably out east.
2. Markstrom had reaffirmed his consideration for NJD
3. Markstrom doesn't want to be shopped around, I know some dislike this but he controls where he goes. Yes Markstrom knows that if he doesn't like this then he's stuck in Calgary for now and he knows this. It really comes down to power to go where he wants or power to stay put because he doesn't dislike Calgary.
4. Both Markstrom and CGY want this to be over sooner rather than later, no desire to go into the season with this still lingering.

I'm told there's still a deal in principle in place, it still involves the NJD and it still involves the pick. Retention is still required and there's been back and forth discussion about various additional pieces from both sides. The Devils would like to add on both the backend and up front in the top 6 with the #1 Goalie being the primary requirement.

Flames looking to see if they can help NJ out with an additional piece, I have no confirmation what the additional(s) are - but feel like Holtz is still looking to be added.

How do we feel about Markstrom and Coronato for 10 and Holtz?

I didn’t love holtz as the main piece but if there’s something to be done with 10th AND holtz? I’d love that. Maybe Mangiapane retained is the piece moving back along with markstrom?

No retention I do this deal although I much prefer Coronato to Holtz but make the swap to get the 10th pick and have even more cap flexibility

Calgary could seriously be giving up the best piece in the deal moving Coronato, and that includes whoever the 10th pick might be.

For where Calgary is at in the re(word), they shouldn't consider anything like this and absolutely should retain instead of losing one of their top prospects.

I think we're still retaining...

Markstrom retained is marginally less valuable than the 10.
Coronato is marginally more valuable than Holtz.

He's a jersey kid... They probably like that. Fits the bottom 6 a bit better. Holtz a bit more boom bust but I feel he does well here given the potential opportunity. Think it's a win win.

Maybe... Or maybe we are getting the best 2. Hard to say at this point. I'd give him up to chip 10 loose. Not like he's lit the world on fire. Is he a top 50 prospect league wide at this point?

If the Flames can get the 10th overall for Markstrom that would be massive.

Really kickstarts this non-rebuild rebuild.

Just get the 10th overall and don't give up top prospects.

Anything else and money ought to be fair game. No reason to be withholding on that front.

If they want a winger, we have many. And then maybe you can get Holtz back as younger compensation.

If the Devils are looking for a top-6 forward - someone reliable and seasoned - then Coleman is the obvious choice (I just don’t see Mangiapane as a fit for them). He used to play in NJ, so he’d likely waive his NMC. The issues would be cap hit, and whether the Flames want to create another big hole in their roster.

My guess - the Flames want both Iginla and Yakemchuk.

Yes, he absolutely is.

He had a couple of very solid years of college hockey, and a half season of AHL hockey, where he absolutely did light the world on fire (he was 12th leading scorer on a point per game basis and second youngest on that list behind only Logan Stankoven), and he played 34 NHL games this past year. The guy has been perfectly seasoned for a breakout or a big step this coming year or two depending how his offseason goes.

I doubt the Flames would even consider his name in a trade with the time they've put into him and where he is at.

Number 10 is an attractive asset, but it's still just a magic bean (just like the 13th overall pick was three years ago), and the player picked there most likely will need a few years of seasoning.

This boredom with prospects that don't automatically light it up as soon as they step into the show is really odd to me. Look at most stars in the NHL. It takes a few years for them to hit their strid.
