It doesn't matter. Markstrom has not been great but he's made a few really good saves on shots from the slot on both Lindholm and Monahan. That's what goalies are there for. Smith made those saves early last season, but he hasn't for a while now and he needs to get back to it. You can dissect each goal as much as you like, he still needs to save more than 8 of 12 shots. We should be winning this game, not fighting uphill because our goalie can't ever come through for us.

I’m stuck in the hospital and was hoping for the Flames to cheer me up. Instead my fever has gone up and I feel worse. I should have watched a funny movie instead.

Paul Byron scored on a breakaway. Of course.

It's both. slightly titled towards Smitty.
Honestly I expected more from Smith early on. He's not living up to expectations.

Flames organization is looking dumber and dumber for a decade now

They are trying to win games
They are playing the guys that are giving them the best chance to do so

I absolutely disagree. Markstrom has looked like a starter is supposed to look. If the goalies were reversed we would be up like 9-2 right now. The forwards have been fine.

They have not been far better. Even at best. When you're down, crash the net. Stop trying to make the pretty play and go back to the basics of hard work and win battles. Especially when the goalie is playing better than your own.

As Prout plays while Andersson sits.

Goaltending or not, this team just doesn't fit together properly. Something isn't right with the mix. Separately, there's some good players. Collectively, it doesn't work. Hasn't for a few years now with this core.

I like the Vernon mask, but I am wondering if it would be 3-3 right now with the real Vernon between the pipes. Flames will need at least 6 goals tonight to win.

Canuckleheads @ Flames
I’m at the Dome:
1. “New experiences” for the fan was an outright lie by the Flames organization. This is the crappiest in-arena experience for a home opener I’ve seen.
2. Mike Smith can’t make a save. Yes - they’re decent chances against but NHL goalies make saves. Mike Smith can’t get it done. He may cost us significantly if things continue down this path.
3. The on-ice narrative is nearly identical to the Gulutzan era.
4. This is troubling
5. Go Flames Go, please. For the love of the hockey gods.
6. I need a beer.
7. Section 217 is solid.

We’re about to go 0/2 against Vancouver while drastically outplaying them. Parsons is the answer

Honest question, but are we headed to a 'don't touch the goalie' game this year?
The overturned call was a couple wacks and then the result of being piled on, and I'm surprised by this Tkachuk penalty. Such a clear penalty no less that the slash and roughing afterwards were obviously considered justified.
So if the puck is out of play once the it touches the pads why not blow the play dead then? And if it's not, I'm still scratching my head on that overturned goal.
