As an example this was needed to be explained to a 14 year old boy, who is a huge fan of Nenshi and follows him religiously on twitter. He came to me with it as i was watching football yesterday and even after a bit of a discussion and explanation, he was still somewhat confused as to the context. This is a child who saw his mother abused by his father when he was young.
Im merely pointing out how poorly thought out the reference is, and how it most certainly can be offensive to others, including many who are his direct constituents. That's all. Whether you agree or not is irrelevant, as its a completely valid observation.

It's offensive to people who don't get it. When it is explained to them, they should no longer be offended and hey, they learned something!
Nobody should have to apologize for using what is, despite arguments to the contrary, a very common response to a loaded question.
It's like people getting offended at the use of the word "#####rdly". If you don't get it, that's your problem, not the person who has a better vocabulary than you do. Nobody should have to apologize for something that wasn't offensive to begin with.
As for Ezra himself, there is absolutely no doubt that he knows what it means. He is cynically riling up his fans, the dumbest people in the province, with this nonsense about "domestic violence". He's taking advantage of his own audience's ignorance and they don't even know it.
Edit: ha ha ha. The word was actually censored. "ni&&ardly" is what I was going for.

Ezra rolled out the red carpet for Anne Coulter here a couple of years ago, a self-confessed right-wing polemicist (and lawyer) who unabashedly intends to stir the pot every time she opens her mouth.
With company like that, its no wonder Ezra likes to spin faster than a Stampede teacup ride.

Levant is a tool and it'd be nice if he were just ignored.
I am sure the mayor is loving this though as he gets to be the offended one now and people will forget his camp was the was the twitter blowhard not long ago. It worked out well for him.

No. Everyone's here pretty much settled on Levant being an idiot for pretending to be offended by an innocent metaphor and Nenshi being a hero in this exchange very quickly. I hate speaking in defence of people/personalities I actually dislike, and I do dislike Levant, but this is the case in point: he asked two tough questions and Nenshi did all but gave good and credible responses. Even in today's blog post he avoided direct responses. Regardless of Levant's motive, questions were straightforward: can Nenshi's Pembina address recorded on youtube be re-posted, so that everyone can form an opinion for themselves; and, secondly, why are PR people at Pembina given juicy municipal consulting contracts masked as scientific? I wouldn't mind knowing the actual answers that are not generalized and whitewashed. (To be fair, the second question is loaded and presumes that these contracts are sleazy; so, perhaps, an explanation of why Pembina Institute is hired to do anything and what does their hiring process involve would be more appropriate.)

ok, so can someone explain this whole thing to me? Except for the twitter exchange, which I totally understand.
I have no idea what the Pembina Institute is, and why it is bad (or perceived as such) for the city to have obtained their services.
I have some vague guesses from the context of this argument, but I don't work in the Oil Industry, which seems to be who is getting offended, so perhaps the point of the issue is escaping me.

Got a free copy of the Sun today and accidentally read the headline of Levant's piece today. The hypocrisy was so stunning I couldn't bring myself to care or read anything he actually had to say.

Wait, they're not always free? As in.....people pay for the Sun?
I thought the paper existed only as something given to McDonalds and A&W,for the old folks to read while they enjoy their 5th free coffee refill.
