What is funny you can insert that GTA San Andreas “here we go again” meme for Treliving as William Nylander is on pace for 111pts and represented by Lewis Gross. I hope whichever way that goes it is a screw up for Tree

Not sure about nose candy, but a few posters were positive Johnny had a skittles addiction.

Why doesn't Garland work in Vancouver? Isn't he the type of player they need right now? Secondary scoring. Speed. And the coach is familiar with him.

Maybe too little too late? I thought the same thing, that he would explode again since Tocchet is back. But I guess not. Perhaps bridges are already burnt.

I think this is highly likely. Lewis Gross is tough, but based on the interview he did on 32 thoughts a while back.....once he has squeezed for every dollar and ask for his client, he wants the deal done and was likely caught off guard.

Either Johnny is a flip flopping fence sitter or someone else changed his mind for him.

The fact columbus was an inbound inquiry into them tells you that Gross didn't expect this to go to free agency. He had no plan because he didn't think he needed one.

- The team and player had been negotiating for some time. At some point Johnny's camp outlined exactly what it would take for him to sign

- The Flames informed his agent that they would meet all of these requirements. At this point the Flames (and I believe the agent) though they had a done deal. Because of the size of the deal, of course Edwards was involved to approve it - and he approved agreeing to every term that Johnny was asking for. Make no mistake, they thought it was done. To the point that the Flames started to coordinate the press conference and other details to announce the signing.

- But that Johnny's camp went dead silent. Which was alarming because logistics needed to be worked out. Sure enough, hours later, Johnny informed the team that he would be testing free agent, which floored Calgary. I'm not sure if this came directly or if Johnny talked to BT himself. There is also speculation that at some point Edwards and Johnny talked directly with Murray tearing a strip off him.

All that stuff I believe is pretty close to being correct. The rest I'm less sure of but still somewhat confident that this is how it played out. I'm also not speculating as to why Johnny changed his mind, just that when it came time to put pen to paper, on a deal that met ALL his requirements, he backed off.

Johnny and his camp (himself, family and agent) were then stunned that interest in him including from specific teams (Philly) wasn't there. They badly mis-judged how he was perceived around the league and who would be interested. As other teams started to use their cap, panic started to set in. The first panic move was to go back to the Flames to try and get a deal done. But Edwards wouldn't entertain this at all. I suspect BT also felt badly burned and also had no interest. At that stage, the panic worsened for the Johnny side, and they started to worry about getting a much smaller deal than they thought, and efforts were made to "get the bag" where they could. They identified a team that had the strong motivation, cap room, and a player (Gudbransson) that could create a back-channel communication to let the Jackets know that Johnny was interested. And they grabbed that deal because that's the one that was out there for them.

That's how I think it all played out.

Everything that Jiri says is consistent with what I believed happened, and lines up with what was reported. Like him, I just don't really care about his reasons, that's his business.

I guess the one party I'm not entirely positive about is the "circling back to Calgary" stuff on day 1 of free agency. Were there any serious discussions or offers or did one party simply say not interested. And who was that party.

Agreed it would make for a good long form podcast. But the drama was wider than just Gaudreau. I’d like to hear the full story - Gaudreau’s negotiations and breakdown, Tkachuk’s decision to leave, the trade with Florida, signing Huberdeau and Kadri - in a long doc style. And all through the lens of the difficulty of operating small-market Canadian NHL teams and the desperate efforts they make to try to compete in the league. Because all of the above is shaping up to be a major pivot-point in the history of the franchise.

I think what it came down to is Johnny's wife saw the opportunity to move and "happy wife, happy life"

Some interesting Flames notes from today’s 32 Thoughts pod. What would it take for the Flames to send a D to Edmonton? Jeff and Elliot both think Treliving would love to bring both Zadorov and Tanev in, if he could.

Makes too much money for the role he's in. He's a top six player making five million playing in the bottom six.

It's a numbers game. He's the easiest guy to point to for cap flexibility.

Also heard that Conroy is starting to gauge the market for his guys but doesn’t mean anything is happening soon but that is still good news to hear

From the information I received was that it was Johnny who came back and was told no.

I think this is after the opening of free agency and seeing little interest in him, Philly not even attempting ot make cap space for him and low offers from New Jersey and the Islanders.

The timelines and what I am saying lines up with what Jiri outlined as well as what he thought happened.

Pat Steinberg, Eric Francis(YUCK) and others have all said the same thing it was a done deal and Brad through it was wrapped up during the day.

Thats why the Edwards was fuming and didn't want him back, they met every ask of Johnny and he turned around and said naw and tried to crawl back to the same asks when no one else would meet them.

I think its pretty clear we can thank Mr. Edwards for the mess we are in right now.

I think it makes a lot of sense now why Treliving never pulled the Sutter trigger and brought in different guys. It was never going to work with two guys like him and Tkachuk and Treliving likely knew that you build around star players not coaches.
