I’m sure hesitant to give up on Bennett. I really feel that either he or Janko can be that #2 centre we need. I’m more inclined to trade a dman for a top RW. That’s the most obvious hole we’ve got and I think some of our d prospects are ready to make the jump.

I'd definitely move him to the wing where Bennett would have played before I explored trading him or playing him on the 4th line.

I agree, Would love to see what he can do with a new coach. Bennett played very well under Hartley, who had a more reckless system. Under a new caoch I think Bennett could very well put up 40-50 points.
Needs a fresh start but not elsewhere on top of that Burke and Tre have shown in the past that they do like Bennetts game.

See if you can get them to take Brouwer while you're at it.

Frolik + Brodie for Mark Stone (wishful thinking - but they do get to replace both Karlsson and Stone)
Jankowski + Brouwer + Poirier for Max Pacioretty (wishful thinking - but I think Pacioretty will for sure not play again for Montreal)
Gaudreau-Monahan-Stone
Pacioretty-O'Reilly-Tkachuk
Ferland-Backlund-Foo
Mangiapane-Shore-Lazar
Hathaway
Giordano-Hamilton
Hamonic-Andersson
Stone-Kulak
Wotherspoon

For a team lacking forward skill, I just don't like the idea of giving out a young forward that has the tools to be an effective scorer still.
Any deal should be based around the organizational strength at defence in my opinion. Brodie, heck perhaps Hamilton if you can get a better return is a much better asset utilization in my opinion.

It's a risk and personally I don't think Bennett will ever be a top 6 player. Keep in mind, if you don't trade him this off-season and if he has another ####ty year, you will get NOTHING for him next off-season.

But you're giving up a young forward that has the potential to become an effective scorer for a forward that has already proven to be an effective scorer that is also a very good two way player.
I like Bennett and really hope he succeeds but our window to win is now. How much longer can we wait?
Even after this trade we can still move Brodie for a top 6 RW.

I don't think the Flames absolutely need to find another body. They need a better transition game, and need to make use of their speed.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Jankowski - Bennett
Frolik - Backlund - Foo
Mangiapane - Shore - Lazar
Brouwer
That's speed on every line, that is some scoring touch on every line, and that is some physicality on every line.
What is needed is to actually make use of a 2nd scoring line. Darryl Sutter was bang-on in his assessment of the Flames during the trade deadline - the Backlund line is the best 3rd line in hockey.
Bennett does look good with offensive players - especially players that play at speed. Maybe give him Foo on the opposing wing. Tkachuk will be fine though. It is two guys that can attack the net and Jankowski that can make really strong plays all over the ice. That's a good 2nd line, and I bet it would blossom if the transition game speeds up.
This team has an extremely mobile defensive group that can all pass well. This team has a lot of forwards that can play with a lot of speed. We have not seen it for 2 seasons. That's what has to change first and foremost. This isn't the Oilers where we have one fast player and that's it, with a team full of defencemen that find it hard to make a 20ft pass.
This team can and SHOULD be playing an up-tempo game, and they won't be worse defensively. Goaltending has improved, but it isn't like Calgary isn't giving up less shots against as compared to Hartley's tenure (in fact, they are giving up more, which is hilariously bad).
Play up-tempo. It doesn't have to change the puck-possession game. This team has really strong forecheckers on every line too, and every line can play along the boards. So if the Flames can't score on a fast break, it isn't like they have to give up possession. They have players that can retain possession. Joe Colborne became almost indispensable during the playoffs against Anaheim because he was one of the only players that could actually play along the boards (Ferland was hurt).
Now you have guys on every line that can do it. Go with a quick outlet pass, fast 2on1, 3on2, etc., and if you don't score, you have a higher chance of retaining possession with this roster than under Hartley's undersized roster.
I would still like to bring in a goal-scoring winger, but it isn't crucial. The Flames can't score goals because they play too slow. They play too slow in an era where everyone is trying to play faster.

Hamilton for Nylander
Fox + Brodie + Jankowski for ROR + Scandella @50%
Gaudreau - Monahan - W. Nylander
Tkachuk - ROR - Ferland
Bennett - Backlund - Frolik
Mangiapane - Shore - Lazar
Klimchuk, Foo
-Buyout Brouwer
- As others have mentioned, having Backlund and Frolik as the 3rd line is ideal. We cannot be a contending team with them in the 2nd line. ROR behind Monahan would be absolutely insane center depth, considering ROR is the better player.
Giordano - Hamonic
Scandella - Stone
Kulak - Andersson
**UFA**
- I think we take a big hit on defense, but that's if we want a really good forward group going forward. Who knows, we might see Valimaki take a big leap to go on the third pairing, gain that chemistry with Andersson and have Kulak on the 2nd pairing. Losing Hamilton AND Brodie would hurt though. But I feel we have the defensive depth and prospects to be able to not hurt ourselves too bad. Scandella - Stone is a middle of the pack 2nd pairing in the league.
Smith
Gillies
Don't sign or trade for a backup, Treliving. I feel like we can have Gillies/Rittich/Parsons battle it out. Competition is good, and I feel that one of these three are really going to prove themselves worthy of a backup position soon. I think Parsons still has a couple more seasons in the AHL, so this position is basically competition between Gillies and Rittich.
Overall, I feel like I really bolstered the forward depth well, however, the defense is a little questionable (yet doable).

You're comparing 2 different players who play 2 different positions and are counted on to do 2 different things for their teams.
I take JG 10 out of 10 times

If all NHL players were being drafted today, Eichel would get picked well before Johnny. Johnny would not be in the top 10. He is simply to one dimensional.
Johnny will have to be more of a complimentary player on a contending team. Eichel can be the man.
That is not to say that Johnny is not a great player at what he does.

Do the Sabres want to get younger? They certainly don’t need too, probably just the opposite.

In my opinion they should try to keep their core around the same age group.
Eichel, Middelstadt, Ristolanen, Reinhart, Fox, Bennett.
Everyone under 23.

I wouldn't do Bennett and Fox for ROR. Fox is too good, and I still believe in Bennett.
ROR is definitely a player I'd be interested in because Backlund, in my eyes, has proven he's a 3rd line centre - a great one, but if we want to win then that's his role.

We easily get the best player in the deal and theres no certainty Fox signs with the Flames nor Bennett turns into a top 6 player.
Anyways. It was just an idea. Either way hopefully we make some moves. We need more offence

Yea it's pretty typical an underwhelming proposition that wouldn't be enough for Buffalo to consider moving RoR gets tossed out and a few people think they wouldn't do it on our end.
