What is the downside for Jacob Markstrom deciding to go to UFA at this point? He knows multiple teams are interested and if he doesn't like their offers he takes what Vancouver has laid on the table for him.
Based on what I’m reading, it doesn’t sound like any of those guys are number 1 centre material. The smaller guys are more suited to the wing and the bigger guys don’t have the offensive upside to be a number 1. There might be a few number 2 centres in there.
As odd as it may seem, the lowest scoring guy in that group Holloway might have the best chance given his size and speed.

They aren't buying out a 29 year old, top pairing Dman who they owe $58M to.
Their leverage is that, if he doesn't waive, he will be the captain of a team that is rebuilding for the foreseeable future.
Sure, they can threaten him that he’s going to stay but I don’t recall him demanding a trade. And AZ is a pretty chill place to live. And he makes money no matter where he is. In fact, way more in AZ (taxes).
Rask in Colorado pissed off and looking to prove something is going to be a difficult foe to overcome in the playoffs. This is a trendy capable of putting up .92+ behind Mackinnon and co.

Rossi's point rates are pretty unbelievable. I think hes being too underrated for his size.
Pavelski, Bergeron, Richards, Kesler, Getzlaf, and Carter were all drafted outside the top 10 in '03, I know this draft is only considered the best draft since but there'll likely be one or two I mentioned that go on to exceed their draft projections.
I just wish we had more than one bullet in the chamber, hopefully we will with the Johnny and Hanifin connection to the Devils.
Correct me if I am wrong here, but didn't Arizona pay out around a 4 million dollar cheque already to OEL? That leaves 4 million and change left for the season on an 8 million cap hit.
If the above is true, Arizona shouldn't be so desperate to trade him - his cap hit is double that of whatever he has owning to him now. Unless they get what they deem is fair in return, I would just sit on OEL until the next off-season - or at least the trade deadline. That's the exact contract that they are looking to keep, no?
Unless OEL has demanded a trade, I don't think at this point Arizona will be in a hurry to trade him any longer, and they can be patient and see what next season brings - though injury risk/further devaluation certainly is a risk that perhaps they aren't comfortable with.

With the free agent period being shifted to Oct instead of July, I just wonder how that will factor into UFA's with families staying put?
Signing in July leaves lots of time to move and get kids setup but in Oct? With kids already adjusting to new teachers and classmates that might be a bit harder to uproot.
I'm sure some guys will decide to just stay put with their teams if the money isn't a huge difference being offered from other teams.

With covid and school closers in the U.S and most kids going to school from home I'd say its a lot smaller of a concern this time.
Friedman:
Coyotes have asked OEL to expand list but he said no.
Coyotes prefer the prospects that Boston are offering over the ones Vancouver is offering but Vancouver seems more interested in getting a deal done.
Says that Armstrong might model the deal after the deal that sent O'Reilly to St. Louis (Berglund, Sobotka, Thompson, 1st, 2nd)
Johnston:
Hall will look at all offers. Short or long term.
Willing to consider 1 or 2 years.
Vegas looking for a 3rd team to retain some of Fleury's salary in a 3 way trade.
Chicago considering Murray

Amber, Friedman and Johnston did a late night hit:
- OEL was asked to expand list beyond VAN/BOS, but he said no. ARZ is after an O'Rielly return (cap dump + 1st + 2nd + prospect). BOS prospects interest ARZ more, but VAN apparently more keen to pull trigger.
- Fleury likely done in VGK, they may be trying to pull off a trade with a 3rd team to hold some of the cap on Fleury's deal before Fleury ultimately ends up elsewhere
- Hall will listen to all contract proposals and won't dismiss different types of term outright (so won't shut down shorter term deals). Sounds like they'll listen to traditional sales pitches from interested teams
- Chicago believed to be interested in Matt Murray
If Hall is looking at all offers, I wonder if Colorado offers him a 1 year, 9m deal. Hall could just take that deal and then sign a long term one later.
9m x 1 + 7 x 7m > 8m x 7.
Though, I guess there's risk involved if he doesn't play his best with the 1 year deal. If I were him I'd just take the longer term deal right now if there is a team that is more than willing to offer it.

He might take a 2 year deal in CGY on the low as well. Then cash in maybe when everyone is up for a new deal and the flat cap ends.

The only way Hall signs a one year deal is if he goes ring chasing with a contender on a below market deal.
If it’s just about the money, take the $70M you could get next week.
