And then yeah the trade Vancouver made for OEL where you give up a 9th OV pick for a guy you bought out and guy you can't give away for free 2 years later.
|
Duchene didn’t work out - Ottawa had Stone and Karlsson, and had just been to game 7 of the 3rd round. It’s a swing and a miss, it’s not the worst trade of the cap era.
Seth Jones, again, buying a prime-aged defenseman for a 1st, 2nd and prospect - that’s business as usual. Chicago giving him a bad contract and Jones not living is immaterial - he returned the going rate for a 26 year old D one year from UFA.

Erat for Frosberg is right up there for one of the worst trades in the last 20 years

Everyone knew the deal for Jones at the time was awful. The contract was just a cherry on it.

In hindsight the Phaneuf trade got better over time as well lol. It was terrible value at the time but kind of evened out in the end. Opposite of the Tkachuk trade lol.
I am not even sure the Phaneuf trade makes the top 10 bad list at this point.
|
The Phaneuf deal was mitigated by Phaneuf having chronic hip issues and his play substantially declining as a result. It helps save face a little I guess. At the time the deal was made, it was terrible though. Apparently no one else in the league even knew he was available so there was no bidding wars.

Forsberg and Erat - yeah, good call on that one. Like the Phaneuf Trade, everyone knew it was stupid the moment it happened. Hall/Larsson is also bad.
In any case - the Phaneuf trade is at the very least on the Mount Rushmore of bad trades in the history of the salary cap, and on that, I will not budge.

It wasn't just Phaneuf. It was Phaneuf and Elisha Cuthbert that were traded away.

Oh for sure. It was awful value at the time and another example of Sutter being terrible. Just funny that Stajan might have actually ended up being the best piece in the deal after it was all said and done.

Updates would be a nice break from these horrendous trade proposals, where we for some reason either fleece the other team or ourselves with no middle ground or sense of reality.

I think it’s worth it to retain salary on these dudes if it’s the difference in quality of picks for the Flames.

The longer it remains quiet the more I am expecting Lindholm to sign and the trades will be re-tool focused. Hanifin for Duclair+, Toffoli for a 3rd line center, and Backlund for a middle six winger lol

I think we wind up with Konecny somehow. Hanifin for a high pick in 2023 and we trade that or our #16 for him. Toffoli for a 1st and draft with it. Coronato and Philips in on RW this year. Backlund for futures to clear cap for raises to Lindholm and signing zadorov longer.

Yeah this is the fear, I don't think Lindholm re-signs but if he does I think they'll indeed go for a re-tool again.

Great result, if it's true that ownership is not allowing a rebuild. Although I'm not in for moving down in the draft. Would love to see the flames acquire Konecny, retain Lindholm, and bring in more higher picks.
