lol how is that better? No one established in the return. At least the Phaneuf deal had Stajan, Mayers, White etc

I guess a 1st?

purely because of the 1st. The question I guess is whether you value that more than what Stajan did as a Flame

The only difference is that the spare parts are prospects. Toffoli is worth a late 1st and b/c prospect. So they are getting Hanifin for Niemela, Timmins, and Steeves. I think it is worse

Lol you know its a s*** trade proposal when they don't even include their (late) 2023 1st in a trade for 2 guys that would immediately solidify their top-4 D and top-6 FW.

You can keep your garbage, thanks for the offer though chief.

The Phaneuf trade is the worst single trade in the history of the salary cap.

It is - a 1st pairing D with 5 years of term left, a good prospect D and a valuable PK centre for a a bunch of replacement players, including Stajan.

No draft picks. Not one.

It didn’t make them better short term, it didn’t make them better long term, and they never turned any of the pieces they got into anything either.

For a guy who was nominated for the Norris a year earlier, and the 3rd Calder nominee with Sid and Ovechkin.

A complete and utter calamity in both value and results.

Provide at least one counter example, that makes this little sense, that achieves this scale.

The Duchene trade is worse probably, Seth Jones deal is also terrible.

And then yeah the trade Vancouver made for OEL where you give up a 9th OV pick for a guy you bought out and guy you can't give away for free 2 years later.

That one’s bad, but that’s a player who was already dead weight. It’s a stupid trade, but it’s not worse than Phaneuf.

Phaneuf was having a bad year, after starting with four straight 47+ point seasons, sold for rubles on the dollar.

The thing that saves the Phaneuf deal is that with benefit of hindsight the Flames sold at the right time.

They just sold for the wrong package.

9th was for Garland.

The rest of the deal is still the Titan submarine of NHL deals.

OEL + Garland + 9th. The Seth Jones trade was brutal. The Forsberg to Predators was awful. Tatar to Vegas was rough. Hall for Larsson

In hindsight the Phaneuf trade got better over time as well lol. It was terrible value at the time but kind of evened out in the end. Opposite of the Tkachuk trade lol.

I am not even sure the Phaneuf trade makes the top 10 bad list at this point.
