It's a negotiation and that's why all the specific parts are in the mix. It provides value and improvements in key areas for each team and balances out the risk.

OK, so they are not getting Tkachuk.
But Calgary has to trade him. No team has to trade for him.
Calgary can say "you're not getting Tkachuk" right up until he leaves as a UFA.
And once his salary is set via agreement or arbitration, the extension is off the table until Jan 1. So, that ticking clock is preventing Treliving from sitting on his high horse for too long. There are likely only a few teams who are serious contenders for Tkachuk. Treliving can't afford to dismiss any of them.

Jersey has to move more cap. They have Boqvist, Bratt, and Woods as RFAs. Boqvist is probably going to cost them $1.5-2M on a short-term deal. Bratt is going to get $5-6M and Wood will do no worse than his qualifying offer of $3.5M. So you're talking $10-12M in additional cap with those players. They need help with dumping cap to fit Tkachuk in.
|
Yeah, agreed after looking at their cap situation. There'd be big (necessary) value to NJ in the Flames taking both of Tatar and Johnsson ($8M combined cap) off of their hands - this would open up the space for NJ to fit all of Tkachuk, Bratt, and Woods deals under their cap.
To CGY
Mercer + Holtz + Tatar + Johnsson + 1st
To NJ
Tkachuk + 2nd
Flames flip Tatar + Johnsson at the deadline for a couple picks.

I wonder how much this development is impacting Kadris value. I could see teams preferring to have Tkachuk but then they have to give up assets to get him. However the cap space for either contract are likely similar so suitors who were in on Kadri may be giving pause and exploring this with Calgary, and now impacting Kadris pursuits.

Does jersey have a real cap dump it needs to get out of? That would be ideal I think to add value

Yes, they cannot fit both of Tkachuk and Bratt deals unless they unload $8-9M of bad contracts. Tatar & Johnsson are the 2 obvious ones as they are overpaid, as well neither of them were drafted by or have been in NJ long and so the loyalty factor does not exist, IMO.

It kinda sucks that Mangiapane's hearing is before Tkachuk's. May end up just taking the arb contract for Eat Bread

Johansson has a M-NTC (10 teams). Makes trading him more difficult.

Some dumb questions
Seen some posters here wanting a player 24 years or younger- is this a magic number that allows for a good contract before FA, or just a arbitrary RFA age?
Whats with Jan 1? Confused. I thought I saw other teams can offer contacts then to him even if he is under contract with us?
Thanks!

One of the rumored New Jersey offers from before was:
Hischier/Bratt
Ty Smith
for
Tkachuk
If Tkachuk goes there that's probably the structure with a bit more added - but with Ty Smith traded for Marino now it would probably look a bit different.
I don't see the Flames looking for a pure draft capital trade though - they are going to want a young forward that is already an NHLer.
A Kyrou, Bratt, Hischier, type will probably be part of the trade.

Exactly. Tunnel vision is how you end up with a bad trade. Jay Feaster school of trading.
Also, fans value draft picks way higher than they should. Is 2023 a great draft? Yes. Is a late 1st some sort of silver bullet? No. I mean, I'm all for acquiring 1sts in a strong draft. But let's not overvalue them.

Tkachuk can't talk to other teams without permission now that Flames have elected for arbitration. Jan 1st will be the earliest he can sign his next contract.

24yrs & younger basically implies they're either on their ELC, or first contract and may still be an RFA at the end... in other words players we'd have more contract control with than someone who's soon a UFA. The other angle is just that we're trading away a young player who was supposed to be a big part of the core for the team for a while, so need to replace that. Don't get older.
Jan 1 (or around then, has moved around a bit over the covid seasons) is when players who sign an arbitration-awarded contract are eligible to sign an extension. So in this case, if the Flames sign Tkachuk to only the 1year deal assigned by the arbitrator, then trade him, he can't sign an extension right away.
- This is why I think he gets traded before the arbitration date.

So Tkachuk's arb date is the latest possible? That can't just be luck can it?
