I agree. I also think the owners value Darryl a lot, and he is going to coach all three years of this contract. Which means if things continue to go sour or if the two can't work together, BT is the one that is going. Whether that means he resigns, or they let him go.
But I think, generally, owners want both guys here.
Agreed. When you look at Tre's trades, signings, drafting and coach hirings as a whole the only thing that has been a complete disaster is the coach hirings. You don't fire a guy for that... you step in sure... but you don't fire the guy.
I doubt Darryl has designs on the GM role (sure hope he doesn't). But if this doesn't go smoothly or work out in the short term, Dean Lombardi may be running the team by summer. Long shot: Jim Rutherford.

Oh no question...i think Sutter is a really really smart guy and a hell of a hockey coach. but mostly a really good man. I've had a couple encounters and talked to him.....though it goes back a long time now.
But he for sure is going to be a huge wake up call for some of these guys and as I said earlier, one that they have earned.

Sutter is a perfect coach for baseball-style format within a shorted season. This season is now salvaged! He will make the team play faster, which is what has brought successes to this core.
Although that could be an alarming development that the owners are not giving the GM autonomy, it greatly matters how it went down. And that's probably something we'll never know.
If the owner called the GM and said something along the lines of Ward is not working out, would you be OK with Darryl as replacement? We will let you offer him a 3 year deal.
That is a lot different than the owner calling Darryl, doing the deal, then telling the GM this is happening like it or not.

I'm sure the owners like Treliving well enough, simply by virtue of fact he is still employed.
But it's pretty clear to me we're in a situation where the coach has a lot more security than the GM. I don't imagine ownership had such a say in BT's three previous coaching hires.
Well he did it last time. Basically explained it at the time as Iggy was the best player so he should be the leader.
No, he didn't. Conroy has told this story hundreds of times. While Sutter clearly had his eyes on Iginla as the team's captain, he did not force the issue—Conroy chose when to give up the captaincy.

Because they've been playing poorly enough to have had their head coach fired and maybe the leadership in the room is part of that? Not saying it is but that's why I'm asking.
No need for you to re-ask the question I just posed.

The Oilers had 4 guys score 20 goals that year, and five guys got 50+ points.
The Flames had ONE and it was Iggy.
The next highest guy was Donovan at 18. Nobody not named Iggy broke 50 points.
It was Iggy, Kipper, Regehr, and, respectfully, a bunch of nobodies.
.
While true these seasons occurred on either side of a lockout where league scoring went up by I think half a goal per game—03-04 was lowest scoring season since the 1950s- although I can’t argue that Donovan was their second highest goal scorer which is pretty not awesome

This is probably true, but I would be very surprised to see any management changes this summer. In another year? Perhaps.

I doubt he would ever actively try to usurp a GM, but Sutter undoubtedly has the ear of the ownership. I would not be surprised if part of the decision to bring him in was to evaluate the organizational structure for the owners. His opinion will matter to the owners and I have no doubts they are going to ask him his opinion on a lot of things.
What will be telling is the type of transactions that happen in the next year. When Sutter was working under Button, there were some transactions that you just knew had Darryl's fingerprints all over them.
I don't have any reason to think that Treliving feels he is above Sutter's council when it comes to these things. Good teams tend to have GMs and coaches that act more like partners rather than being siloed in their roles.

Can't image Darryl has designs on the GM job. He's 62 years old and probably doesn't want to put in the time required. Did it once.. went back to coaching and had tremendous results.
Mediocre at best as a GM. Great as a coach. He's smart enough to know where his bread and butter is.

Sorry, I stand corrected.
To clarify, Sutter wanted Iginla as his captain, mentioned that in interviews after the fact. Pretty much exactly what I said about Iginla being the best player so he should be the captain.
At some point prior to that Conroy graciously gave up his captaincy.
