My favorite bit from Spector in that article...
Quote:
Hockey captains don’t admit, “Hey, I’m banged up. But I’m the captain here, and right now it’s all hands on deck.”
That would be akin to McDavid dodging responsibility: “Hey, I’m injured. Someone else is going to have to get us out of this slump.”
This is a captain, doing what hockey captains do. It doesn’t make him a hero, but just a guy doing what he sees as his job.

Nobody anywhere, at any time ever, has called McDavid a hero.

McDavid is used to playing injured, he's been playing with a broken heart since the Oilers drafted him.

Mark Spector is emblematic of the entire Oilers fanbase. They will never accept that the team is just not good enough to win. It cannot possibly be that the roster is dog crap, it must be the coach!

He needed two weeks off after the internal injury, probably more.
But with severe organizational and his main cheerleader Snet pressuring to play in the outdoor game, and "good enough to suck it up" since, he now can't go back off the roster, especially with the losses mounting.
Though, a situation can use in his parting comments when he signs somewhere else in a few years, even if the Oilers bring on his entire family and friends and gets the wife to remobel Rogers Place.

It doesn't get easy for the Oilers over the next while
Sat Kraken 5-6-1
Mon Islanders 5-4-3
Wed Kraken 5-61
Sat @tampa 6-4-4
Mon @flor 7-4-1
Wed @Car 8-5-0
Fri @Was 5-4-2
With Vegas at 18 points up on them, Van 16 points up on them, LA 14 points up on them, Dallas 12, Colorado 11, and Winnipeg 11. A Eastern Road trip could literally kill their season before the end of November.

Their season is already dead. But yeah 0 for 4 on that trip would be pretty fun.

Some Flames fans were optimistic that the Flames would be better this year; some weren't. Pretty much everyone around the Flames were on a wait and see mode and most were team rebuild after the first 10 games. I would say that almost everyone is still waiting to see what the Flames are as a team or what moves they will do for the long term. Zero people are looking at the Flames as a team that is going to do damage right now.
If you can't enjoy the absolute downfall of the Oilers, then you are not having fun as a Flames fan.

This right here is why it is soooo sweet this year. If they started this year with humility or cautious optimism we would all still be laughing, but it wouldn't be as great. Instead they boldly declared Cup or Bust, apparently not realizing that there are 2 options there, and all the analysts and media and personalities doubled down on it, basically guaranteeing them to win the division and many declaring them the 2024 cup winners.
Meanwhile, down here, where even outside this thread, we looked at the actual build of their roster and concluded that it just wasn't any good. They lacked all the parts they needed for success outside of 2 players, and they ran on historic highs last year on the PP plus personal success. Only in No-Goodland can you have players have career years, and then go all in on that being the new minimum level of play they will have.

The hole is too deep for sure. Although the pitiful west will make it look more feasible than it should be.
They have to get 7 game above water just to reach 500.
Then add another 10-13 to be in that typical wildcard ballpark.
Basically have to play near .700 consistently the rest of the way.

Maybe tomorrow I'll let my head coach coach.
Maybe tomorrow I'll get off the ice.
Through my contract, that never seems to end
Holland keeps making deals that are braindead
So if you want to join me for a while
Just toss your jersey, wear sweatpants, that’s Oilers style
Maybe tomorrow I'll backcheck on the play
Until tomorrow I'm not leaving the O zone.

He absolutely could be playing 25 minutes a night while injured. Especially while playing for the oilers. They only know one way to use McDavid.

(Verse 1)
In Edmonton town, where the Oilers play,
A gloomy tale, took place one day.
San Jose's grin, after a 3-2 feat,
Last place despair, oh, what a defeat.
Coach Woodcroft pacing, on thin ice,
Fired whispers swirling, like a cold wind's slice.
Sweatpants and good shoes, a fashion crime,
In the city where hope takes its time.
(Chorus)
Edmonton is no good, in last place we stand,
Lost to San Jose, it's not what we'd planned.
Woodcroft on the hot seat, the tension's understood,
In sweatpants and good shoes, our team misunderstood.
(Verse 2)
Around Rogers Place, a whiff in the air,
Urine's perfume, a scent unfair.
McDavid, a star, his spirit dim,
Basketball dreams with a low ceiling brim.
Depression lingers, like an Edmonton fog,
A city's burden, like a sinking log.
In sweatpants and sorrow, they trudge the floor,
Edmonton's woes, an everlasting lore.
(Chorus)
Edmonton is no good, in last place we stand,
Lost to San Jose, it's not what we'd planned.
Woodcroft on the hot seat, the tension's understood,
In sweatpants and good shoes, our team misunderstood.
(Bridge)
But in every storm, a chance to rise,
To wipe away tears, to reach for the skies.
McDavid's dreams in a basketball court,
Yet the low ceiling reminds of Edmonton's sport.
(Verse 3)
So let's sing this song of the Oilers' plight,
A team in struggle, in the harsh limelight.
Woodcroft's fate hanging, like a sword of wood,
In a city where some say, "Edmonton is no good."
(Chorus)
Edmonton is no good, in last place we stand,
Lost to San Jose, it's not what we'd planned.
Woodcroft on the hot seat, the tension's understood,
In sweatpants and good shoes, our team misunderstood.
(Outro)
In Edmonton's arena, the story unfolds,
Of a team in turmoil, where the bitter truth holds.
But hope springs eternal in the neighborhood,
Even if, for now, they say, "Edmonton is no good."
