Possible injury to a big potential rental player.
In a year that couldn’t possibly get any worse for Taylor Hall or the Buffalo Sabres on the ice, Taylor Hall just took a slap shot to the face. Hopefully he’s okay, but with Eichel already out...eek.

I wouldn't expose any of those guys to protect Rakell myself, so It don't see Rakell as making much sense as a target.

You are exposing Backlund all day, every day. Not that has anything to do with his play or his value to the team, quite simply, I don't think Seattle will bite on his contract.

Why wouldn't they. They have $81.5m in cap space. If Backlund was made available he would be far and away the best player made available from the Flames in the expansion draft. His contact isn't a bad contract, he isn't overpaid, so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't take him if he was available.

This is exactly how Langkow broke his neck. Defenseman cross checks you down into the path of a slapshot...stupid Ian White.

Not every player over 30 with a big AAV is a bad contract.
Hornqvist is a little over 2 years older than Backlund and earning every penny of his contract (though his numbers were down the previous years).
Backlund will likely be at least 4-4.5M player in his last years. Guys like him do not grow on trees. Cite a swedish forward who really fell off around age 30? Loui Eriksson is the only the comes to my mind...(I'm sure there are a few others, but it doesn't seem nearly as common as with guys like Ladd, Lucic, Okposo, Skinner, Neal etc.

I would drive backs and dube to the airport for Rakell. They are not interested in backlund. May have to be zary, dube and a pic for starters. We would need to dump some salary. Bennett for pics.

I wouldn't do Zary alone for Rakell.

Zary, Dube, and a pick for Rakell....that’s horrible.
Did Rakell suddenly become a high end top line winger? Because that’s what your paying for if you’re giving up those assets.

I'm all for keeping the youth of this organization. Seems fool hardy to rely on this core at this point for a cup run but if Tree is going all in in the next 3 years then yeah those are the types of assets that go out the door . I hate it personally but I suppose we will have to see what the standings look like April 12th.
Also I think there may be a little pre trade deadline...trade deadline. Get those cross border deals sewn up so the acquiring Canadian team can get their players asap with a little room to have their acquisitions fold into the team with as many games remaining as possible. Dubas alluded to this ideology today.

Lol people getting rakell to then expose Backlund are out to lunch. We have to give up something of value plus make room for rakell so there goes Bennett + or maybe ryan + is all I can see flames letting go that carries cap atm. Then you protect another decent winger only to expose a decent centre in Backlund.
As a result we are weaker down the middle next year with no reasonable replacement for Backlund who can handle the matchups he does night after night.
You're better off making a move like this in the off season so you aren't wasting asset value waiting for quarantine timelines. You aren't forced to expose more than necessary, and if they feel they need to trade Backs it's not like there isn't a market for solid 2 way centres that put up 45 pts/yr. At least get some value for our assets that have some.

Severe under rating of Backlund. He makes less than Lucic, and he’s the most complete player on the team. There’s no way Seattle is getting four centres better than him - they’ll be lucky if they get two.
Losing Mangiapane or Dube would sting.
Losing Backlund would actively make us worse.
