I'm kind of intrigued at the idea of Mikael Grigorenko as a waiver claim. He had a good start to the season and I think has gotten "Tortorella'd". I know he can play all 3 fw positions so maybe he could be a guy who could slot in beside Johnny and Monny.
I also keep coming back to Val Nichushkin as some sort of addition that would be the perfect blend of Ritchie and Ferland. Except wayyyyy waayyyyy better defensively than both of them.
I'd try and pry him out of COL.

well, before we pass judgement, lets see if the Flames make any moves before the deadline. And who knows, maybe Treliving reached out to Perry during the offseason and Perry didn't want to come here. There could be a lot of reasons that we don't know about that prevented the Flames from placing a claim.

I suspect there won’t be a move for quite a while until Sutter finishes assessing what he’s got to work with. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wants to see Nordstrom in a game.

We may be happy with Nordstrom once he gets into a game now that Sutter is here. Seems like a player who would excel under Sutter's style.

That’s what I thought. Sutter loves those utility guys.

The Flames have pretty much 14 NHL forwards, plus a handful of 'spects on the farm who are kicking on the door pretty hard.
Dominik Simon played pretty much every game for the Pittsburgh Penguins the last two seasons, averaging almost 14 minutes per game. Who do you take out of the line up to put him in? Bennett, Ritchie or Leivo?
Same question will need to be asked if/when Nordstrom comes back from injury.

Could have fooled me based on what we’ve seen from him in red. Calling him a ‘warm body‘ out there is the best complement I got.

Yeah, a lot of players looked like warm bodies with the coach we had. No clear direction can do that.
His track record is pretty good in the NHL, and on a team that has been much better than the Flames too.

I think if Perry was ever claimed or acquired by the Flames he would sign his retirement papers.

5. Things can always change, but the price is also high for Anaheim’s Rickard Rakell. Calgary wouldn’t pay it, and I’m not sure there’s a match with Toronto. The Ducks, I think, want young players with a little more of an NHL track record for him.
In this job, you try to understand the personalities you’re dealing with. One thing I’ve learned about GM Bob Murray is he can think, “Not ready to do this, not ready to do this,” and then decide, “Okay, I’m ready,” almost catching people by surprise. Let’s see where it goes with Rakell.

Sounds like a great reason to acquire him then.

What about bring in Bobby Ryan to play Right Wing with Sean and Johnny? I don't see Detroit wanting a lot for him. Maybe a 4th rounder and D. Simon type player.
Bobby does still have some offensive skill.
He is only making $1M this season so not would not have to much cap wise.

My #1 realistic target is Mantha. Problem is that the expansion draft just messes the whole thing up big time.
Any forward addition comes with the caveat that you would now have to expose one of Backlund, Mangiapane or Dube in the ED.
I'm also not really wanting to see the Flames trade away any futures at this point. The coaching change has injected some optimism for sure, but this team is still just a bad stretch from lottery-ville. Can't afford to squander potential pieces like that.

I think they run the season out and address after the expansion draft. Team sure doesn't feel like a Mantha away from winning.
Is the draft before or after the expansion draft?

I would be interested in Rakell but the problem would be the assets I would be willing to include.
No: Pelletier, Zary, Dube, Mangiapane
Yes: 1st, Bennett
Maybe: Phillips (seems like he should be held onto) or other prospects who are doing well

He gets a ton of pucks on net. Currently tied for 8th most this season with 95.

Yeah, because there’s no one to pass to on Anahiem that can score.

The problem with acquiring Rakell is the expansion draft, who are you willing to expose out of Dube, Mangiapane or Backlund to protect Rakell, or are you willing to expose Rakell just after giving up assets to acquire him?
I wouldn't expose any of those guys to protect Rakell myself, so It don't see Rakell as making much sense as a target.

I don't see Ritchie as the problem, I see Gaudreau as the problem. He's too small to play this type of game. He spends too much of his night blowing snow and losing the puck to avoid hits than he does trying to make plays. His time is up as a Flame as far as I'm concerned, and Johnny Hockey is the first player I've developed any level of affinity toward since Lanny McDonald was in Flames togs. I think its time to move on and find a guy that can fill that slot. Sadly, I think the same goes for Tkachuk. The guy has been MIA since the puck flip and I don't see him stepping up in this pressure game.
