For one first-over-all? Doesn't seem reasonable.

I was assuming that 2 of the three would be prospects that turn into players.
if you look at the history of #1 picks being traded, the returns are typically a lot... it just doesn't happen very often esp in the NHL
the only comparable is Lindros that i can think of... and while Hughes isn't that, he should get you a lot

Two blue-chip prospects since they turn into top 6, plus a top 6. Hmmm... don't suggest I look it up, your claim, show what #1 picks typically get. I think it's too much still.

The perception was that they were on the right track with cleaning house by bringing in Bob Nicholson, Chia, and McLellan. All done in an effort to appease Orr and McDavid that they are no longer a poop show. If McDavid couldn't get things corrected, since it's clearly in the water, as nothing has changed. Now we are on the verge of a Gretzky becoming the new GM as Lowe and McTavish are still very much part of it all.

Three Top 6 forwards for the Oilers is basically just three random roster players from any other team so it's pretty conceivable they could get that for the #1 pick.

A top player on the trade market routinely commands a 1st rounder, a top prospect and a roster player

If a top line player for Edmonton is Ty Rattie, then you should be able to trade, say, Mangiapane for the pick.
Rattie: 4 goals, 10 points in 37 games, several with McDavid. Mangiapane: 2 goals, 4 points in 20 games mostly on the fourth line, no PP time.

Unlike the Lindros trade days, any impact roster player or players have no movment clauses.
A fact which Tambelleni, McTavish, Lowe, Chia, McLellan and any Oilers exec have all witnessed first hand over the years thanks to Lowe's two faced lying to payers and agents, and stunts like the Comrie pay saga, that said players aren't waiving, even if the opposing GM is willing to make a deal in principle.

What do they do when they get them, they have a poor track record with young talented players.

sure, but i'm not saying that a trade is going to happen.
I'm saying if the Oilers win the lottery, they are better off trading that pick in order to rebuild their talent pool... through some combination of picks, prospects and players...
Whether the Oilers can actually identify or develop talent is a different question altogether.

The Flames have just gone through a slump, and their worst stretch of the season, with only 2 wins so far in February. Yet during that time, they have still extended their lead on the Oilers by 2 pts.

If I were the Oilers, and we had just won the lottery (again!), and we're staring at Hughes, I think I would look to move McDavid and go for (yet another) full on rebuild.
With the return you could get for McDavid, plus drafting 1st and 32nd, you could add a bunch of talent in a hurry.
Trade RNH as well, and get a couple more prospects.
The cap floor wouldn't be a problem because you still have Draisaitl and Lucic, etc., and you can sign a vet or two in the free agent market to round it up.
You could come out of this summer with half a dozen great prospects.

Yeah, like to Avs for Rantanen, Girard, both 1st round picks. (just pulling names out of the air).

Yup, as soon as they draft Hughes, the clock starts ticking, especially with the obliteration of the middle term contract. You suddenly have a player that's jumping from a million bucks to 10 or 11 or 12 million bucks.
If I could trade McDavid and part of my return is a exceptionally good draft pick or a roster ready stud player on an entry level deal, I'm taking it.

On the business side of things, it is going to be a rough year for the Oilers next year. My company in Edmonton has a pair of Loge tables (8 tickets total, roughly $20,000 a seat) that we are rumoured to be giving up next year. I don't we'll be the only ones giving up seats.
Anecdotally, I have been offered company tickets on a much more regular basis this year. I'm a relatively low level employee in a 200 person company. If I'm being offered tickets on a regular basis, there is a lot of people passing on them.
I think the last remaining hope for Oiler fans is that the drop in ticket sales will push Katz to make a change. That somehow he hasn't been interested in winning this whole time and that once they start losing revenue he will change his ways. I think it's a fallacy. He's wanted to win this entire time, he is just completely inept at putting people in charge that can make that happen.

I'm hearing a lot of this from my friends in Edmonton and not just because those companies are mad at Katz or mad at the level of hockey.
With a lack of faith in the Alberta business environment and companies looking for ways to cut costs. season tickets and suites are going to be the first cuts.
I think its going to have the same effect with the Flames as well no matter how well they do this year.
