It's a free challenge? If you're taking the timeout either way, just challenge it. Probably don't win, but it makes no difference if you intend on using the timeout anyway.

So McVay panicked with the timeout and it cost him the free challenge. And then you can't possibly risk another timeout on something that close.

If he challenged, he would have lost both timeouts. I didn't think that was the rule?
Can't you throw the flag to stop play?

That's what I mean. If he had thrown the challenge flag first then it's only one timeout. Once he calls the timeout a challenge then takes another timeout. He should have challenged right away, waiting for the upstairs confirm doesn't matter if you don't care about the timeout.
