One more maybe dumb question...The Fido $17.50 plan includes unlimited incoming texts. What is the charge for outgoing ones?

Good question, I don't know. I am heading to Fido right now with a friend so I'll ask them. I have an additional 15 buck per month charge that gives me 2500 texts among other things.

Generally, 15 cents for texts in North America, more for international. But if you were lucky enough to be on an older plan, they are only 10 cents. I think that was two years ago though.

Thanks for all the info everyone. One final question...Can you add monthly minutes to a Fido plan? On Rogers, you can add a MY5 or unlimited incoming for $10-$15.
Edit: If anyone else was wondering, I read on Howards Forums that Fido can do this, but not for everyone. I hate stuff like that. Do it or don't

Hmmm, I am totally late but you probably should have called retentions. Its a bit of work but in the end you get some good plans.

But don't you have to have an account with Fido for a little while to deal with Retentions?

This sounds like a good deal. I have wanted to get an iPhone for the longest time, but have been waiting for a good deal to come by. I am currently with Fido right now, but prepaid (I never wanted to sign a contract). I average around 20-30 a month on prepaid vouchers.
I want to get the 6GB data plan as well as the iPhone Value Pack (I think it's $15/month) which includes VM, CD, 2500 text, etc.
So totaling everything up:
17.50 + 6.95 (SAF) + 0.50 (911) + 15 + 30 (data) + tax = $73.45
I'm not sure that's a very good deal - maybe someone can comment? Since I don't have a previous contract, I can't called Retentions.
Also, I've heard that since the voice plan is < 30/month, I would have to pay $50 more for the phone (ie. $249 for the 8GB or $349 for the 16GB). Can someone confirm or deny this?
Thanks.

That's a little cheaper than my plan and I have the lowest voice and 6gb data+value pack.
And yes, that's what they told me for plans less than <30/month.

Thanks for the response. I think that today's the last day for the 6GB/$30 data plan so I have to get the phone today.
Hopefully my next post will be from Safari on the iPhone.

If anyone is curious. No, the iPhone screen will not survive a screen first fall from your pocket onto concrete. I conducted the experiment myself this morning.

It still works, it's just not as pretty. The bulk of the damage occurred in the top right hand corner above the screen and there is a rogue crack near the bottom third. It's still a kick in the balls though.

I am having a hard time getting my Shaw email to work on the 3G. It seems that I can get emails when I am using WiFi, but not on the Fido network. Anything I might be doing wrong? iTunes synched the email server or whatever, so all that info should be fine...

I also used your testing method a couple of weeks ago. Twice. In one day. From 9' on to concrete, with my 3g. The first time it did a helicopter flat-spin and scuffed the back-corner. The second time it barrel-rolled on to the corner straight-on, creating a tiny dent by the ringer button.
While I don't recommend such actions, the phone has worked fine since.
PS: One should always button that top pocket while framing offices.

I was really hoping your experiment would yield different results.

OK, so I bought an iPhone last night. It worked until I got to my office this morning but now I'm unable to access any data services (no stocks, weather, internet, email, etc). I sometimes get a "could not activate cellular data network" error and when attempting to use the internet I get "server stopped responding". Is anybody else experiencing issues today or is it just me? Maybe there is an issue with the ancient building I'm in? I'm hoping my phone isn't completely messed up already...
