What if it was? Chicago had cap space to pay the remainder of Giordano's salary at the deadline last year. And probably will this year, too. Like every team in the league.

True, but the cheaper the better, it might even mean mitigating a contract coming back the other way that we dont want.
A prorated $2M #1Dman? For a contender it would be like Christmas.

I'd prefer to get Gio extended at a reasonable cost but if you have to trade him then you do it before the season or early in the season. If you wait until the deadline you roll the dice that he stays healthy, if he gets hurt before the deadline you might lose him for nothing.

I still think it will be a retirement contract.
7 years 45-50 million with decreasing annuals and high up front payments.
In years 6 and 7 when he's make say 4 million and the cap is another 15 million higher you can trade him to a floor team or keep him. Who knows where we are in 6 years anyways.

Presumably anyone inquiring about Giordano would be looking to sign him for a muti year extension that would cost tens of millions of dollars. I can't see a one time withholding of $500K sweetening the pot substantially.
I guess we just disagree on this point. No biggie.

Wait and see I guess. I wouldn't trade him now as it might send a bad message to the team. See if a reasonable contract can be made by Christmas. If the team is out of the playoff race, you start shopping him and see if he's either open taking a reasonable contract or if he plays better to drive his value up.

I would trade him now to avoid the season long distraction. Two very good prospects with a bit of development and a first would be good. Not sure you could get more than that.
IMO Flames are going to have a lot of D banging on the door in 2-3 years and they already have a young stud pair.

Or he can get the Cammalleri treatment and be injured prior to the deadline making him untradable and the Flames get the wonderful opportunity of playing the free agency game or letting him walk for nothing.

Last year, Giordano was the best Dman in the world, for 3/4 of the season. He seems to get injured often, and this will likely increase over time.
Lots of guys getting paid top dollar also don't get injured that often. How much do historical duty cycles play into contract negotiations?
There is less value in being the best player in the world if you're not around to help your team down the stretch and in the playoffs. There is negative value.
I think he will sign at 6x6, less than the Chara contract which was too much. When Chara signed that contract he was historically durable, but we're seeing how quickly he's declining. Giordano, being already fragile, is worth less...

I agree that if he isn't signed by the deadline they should move him.
But you specifically said to wait 'until the end of next season'. which makes no sense, and that is what I responded to

Does this change if the Flames are first or second in the division? Is there a point where it's worth taking a shot at the cup, even if it means risking losing Gio in the offseason?

Hey, thanks for "fixing" my post for me! You're right, who knows what next season will bring. If Brodie or Hamilton are looking like sure fire bets to win the Norris come trade deadline time then let me know.
The post I was quoting stated they are as good as Gio right now, which they aren't. So there's no need to alter my post at all. Carry on.

I seriously doubt that Brodie and Hamilton, as good as they will one day be, will be as good as Gio will be next year. Brodie's play was exposed a tad when Gio went down - he has plenty of room before he matches Gio's consistency. Same for Hamilton.

I thought Brodie had individual games and moment of brilliance that awed me more than Gio at the top of his game. But yes on the other hand he only played games like that about a quarter of the time. Having Engelland as a partner also bombed his contributions IMO.

So you know how Giordano has recovered from his injury and if it affects his performance? And how Hamilton has responded to playing in a different organization with new teammates? And how Brodie's game has changed since he last played, for better or worse?
Great Scott!

Reading comprehension, my friend.
I quoted a post that stated Hamilton and Brodie are as good as Gio is now. Since they haven't played hockey since last season then last season would be our only basis of evaluation. In that case Brodie and Hamilton are not on the same level as Gio. You're talking about the future, not the present.
Hopefully they get there some day, that would be amazing as a flames fan, but to say that it's already happened is just silly.
And PS there are a bunch of videos on Instagram of Gio doing his summer work outs and by a simple eye test it looks like it isn't bothering him at all so I expect him to play just as well as he did last year.

Great question. And yes, IMO, there is a point where you would let it ride.
And that is precisely why, as an organization, you don't let it get to that point. You deal with it now.
Gambling on how well Giordano plays this season, or how healthy he'll be, simply introduces too much risk. That is not how well run organizations conduct themselves.

Yep. If they let it linger they could find themselves watching one of the most valuable trade assets in team history disappear for nothing. Then you'd be at the point where it's conference finals or bust to take that sting away. There are so many ways this can go wrong, and only a couple of ways it can go right. I have full confidence in BT, but I am a little nervous about it given how this organization seems to have a fetish, historically anyways, for letting valuable trade assets go for nothing/less than value. At least it's not Feaster handling this, who knows how badly that would've played out.
