They are still pretty common in hospitals. They are actually really efficient and useful in that setting.
They are also lower power, low maintenance, and can be used when medical equipment might render a cell phone signal unusable.
In Hamas' case, the assumption was it is low tech so less likely to be tapped by Israel. Most of the time pagers are just used to tell the recipient to just get in touch with X number or whatever.
Ya, I don't know how you'd trigger a Li battery to explode in a pager with just malware. You might be able to do it on charging. But just operating? I don't think you'd be able to have a pager draw enough power to destabilize the battery. So you may be right in the distribution part of it, but then you'd be playing a long game for replacements, and to get them into as many hands as possible without it being suspicious. This will be an interesting one.
How on earth thousands went out without one single misfire stoking suspicion. That is some next level espionage. Talk about throwing terror back on terrorists. Anything they own could be a bomb.
1) crazy, where do you even buy that in bulk!
2) this may be what finally causes me to stop using my pager!
3) meh... when Israel conducts military operations that harm civilians, they're monsters. When they retaliate in a manner that only risks the members of a known terrorist organization (and their testicles) with very little serious risk to bystanders, they're also monsters. Israel should honestly just give up and move to Mars, there's apparently nothing they're allowed to do.
this shows a horrifying capability by Israel, and a major problem with Hezbollah. Israel had hacked into their cellphone communications, its why they got so good at killing Hezbollah leaders. They thought they had fixed this by going to a secure GPS system, but this shows that Israel had hacked that method of communication. Hezhollah has to be scrambling, what's next? Landlines? Smoke Signals? A can with a long string?
The sheer patience that the Mossad has displayed is amazing. This was equivalent to (the numbers are rumoured to be 4000) putting 4000 snipers out there, targeting Hezbollah.
I don't care if this seems monstrous, this specifically targeted members of a terrorist group, and saying it will create more retaliation, Hezbollah doesn't have the word retailiation in their dictionary, its attack, they have constantly attacked Israeli civillians since they drew up their charter.
the question that's really interesting is why did the Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon have a Hezbollah pager.

CityNews is reporting that the pagers were received recently in the last few weeks.
Hezbollah had thrown their secured cellphones in the trash when it became clear that Hezbollah's cellphones were vulnerable and Israel was killing Leaders in massive numbers.

Awww you're scared and don't want to be held accountable for your words on the day of a mass murder. Basically gloating over the killing of civilians, it's hard to claim the moral high ground when you can so easily justify the actions of Hamas in your head. Just tell us what the other side is, c'mon brave man. On one side you have dead Israelis and on the other Hamas, how is there no side to take on Oct 7th? Explain yourself.
It's of no surprise there are some tears for Hezbollah here today, this is a true den of vile terrorist simps.
Hamas on one side and Israel’s far right government on the other, with innocent Israeli and Palestinian civilians caught in the middle, like I already explained multiple times. I’ll just quote this moving forward if you continue to struggle.
Your goading is cute but ultimately just makes you look too stupid to comprehend what you’re reading, and that stupidity is likely why you constantly talk yourself into circles where you end up calling for the death of innocent Israelis and constantly hate on hostages and really anyone else you try to defend.

1. Track cellphones and bomb prominent leaders causing terror group to find alternative communication
2. Offer cheap pagers with special "I love Hezbollah" discount.
3. ....
4. "m0554d 53nd5 r364rd5" text message to sold pagers triggering explosives on sold pager.
5. Track and identify the blown up targets as Hezbollah and uncover direct links like the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon.
Hopefully the Pagers were well targeted into Hamas channels and didn’t end up in civilian use cases.
That would be impossible to do assuming Hezbollah members can be anywhere at any time in Lebanon. I saw a video earlier on the news showing one of the explosions which happened at a local grocery store in the fruit/vegetable section.

Yeah the video is interesting. It doesn't look like the actual explosion was THAT deadly. The person holding the pager obviously injured, probably pretty severely, but still alive, and the people in close proximity didn't appear to be injured. The idea that they be used to identify people is certainly interesting.

Wild tactic, however it happened.
Definitely wild, and if it works as intended (assuming it’s intended result was identifying Hezbollah like mentioned without harming civilians) then pretty ingenious and the exact kind of targeted effort needed.

This has to be one of the most insane and opportunistic attacks on an enemy that has ever occurred.
From the videos posted so far, the explosions seemed to pretty accurately only target those who were wearing the pagers, and any bystanders around weren’t harmed seriously.
I think that's only really a concern if the person you're pissing on wasn't going to attack you if you did nothing. What's Hezbollah going to do in retaliation? Shoot rockets at Israel? Attack Israeli civilians? How will Israel adapt to this foreign scenario?!?!
I guess what Israel gets out of it, other than hours of footage of their sworn enemies being emasculated, is a reaffirmation that they can reach their enemies anywhere, anytime. Ultimately, that does have some marginal value.
Based on the video I just watched, it seems like that may have literally been happening. Hezbollah had thousands of members carrying around the pagers in their front pockets.
If the theory is that the devices were infected with malware that caused them to heat up and explode, could you upload the malware remotely?
It's a scary thought, because couldn't you do the same thing with cell phones and other electronic devices?
This sounds like something the joker would do to citizens of Gotham.
Sounds like the heating up was used to trigger the devices:

Sky News Arabia quotes sources saying that today’s large-scale pager attack in Lebanon was possible because the Mossad spy agency got hold of Hezbollah’s communication devices before they were handed over to the terror group.
The Israeli spy agency placed a quantity of PETN, a highly explosive material, on the batteries of the devices, and detonated them by raising the temperature of the batteries from afar, the source says.
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that some Hezbollah members felt their pagers heating up and disposed of them before the series of explosions that killed at least nine and injured about 2,800 people.

Al Jazeera quotes a Lebanese security source saying that the weight of the explosive placed in each device was below 20 grams, and that the pagers that were blown up were imported five months ago. An investigation is being conducted into how the explosive charge was activated, the source adds.
