Also lots of Oilers stuff re: Klefbom/OEL, RNH extension, Hall, Puljujarvi etc
That bobrovsky contract is ugly as sin, and has a full NMC. I have no idea how they will be able to escape that. Something tells me Bob likes living in florida and he doesnt seem to care much about winning.
That being said, if Florida was desperate enough to attach Barkov to him to try and unload, would anyone be slightly interested?
Has Frank ever been really dialed into what is happening with the Flames? I think he had Hamonic on the list last year when a lot of us didn't see the reasoning there and now this year no Gaudreau.
I mean, its just his own list, unsure if its based off anything other than personal hunches so I won't raise my eyebrow too high.
I'm not surprised that Monahan isn't on the big board. I think the probability he gets moved is VERY low.
Johnny though yeah - surprised he isn't on there.
Agreed. I think the only way Monahan would ever be moved is in a package for an improvement. If we just outright trade him we are completely gutting the position everyone says you can't win without.

Oil have $11M to sign Athanasiou, Bear (probably $9M for both unless they bridge) and six others to fill out the roster, and TSN thinks they could be in on OEL or Hall? They have to dump cap even if they don't bring in a big contract.

Well first of all it has been reported by multiple outlets that the Oilers are not qualifying Athanasiou.
And they did qualify that Hall is only a possibility if the RNH extension talks fall through.
I am ardently against trading Monahan, who is a #1 no matter what Love thinks!
At least he's our #1C as far as things currently stand. No way can we trade him except as part of a package to bring back a higher-end #1C.

Fair enough, but a serviceable UFA replacement (3C or 1LW, depending on how they deploy RNH) will still cost them $3M+. And RNH still has a year left in his contract, so I'm not sure how they could bridge signing Hall now.
FWIW, I would surmise that the long-term plan is for Giordano to play out his contract (probably in the top two pairings) and for Valimaki, Hanifin and/or Mackey to push him down the rotation over time.
Granted, he works his ass off, so he's going to make the kids earn his spot.
Every effort will be made to allow Giordano to retire as a Flame if he desires to do so.
Did Gio really play bad (like a #7), or just not up to expectations. He played a lot of the tough minutes and I thought he did decently against the first line for Dallas (Benn 4 points, Radulov and Segin 3 points in 6 games).

IMO, bad in the sense that he made poor decisions at a much too frequent rate. The effort was there but he just couldn't get out of his own way.
All of the whining about Gio's play and contract are pretty irritating. Of course he's going to decline - he's not young. And of course at some point, like every long term contract, his play is below his salary, just like it was way above for the vast majority of the time. And just like any team feasts off of ELC contracts of star players.
Gio had a bad year by his standards, but not horrible by NHL defencemen standards. And, like guys like Weber or Campbell or Chara, is capable of bouncing back somewhat - not to peak Gio but certainly better.
I don't doubt Gio's play can still be at a high level. Even if he doesn't play like an all-star, he would still be at least a pretty good #2D.
I somewhat question his ability to lead, despite all the leadership awards. This team seems to crumble when the going gets tough, and he has to shoulder some of the blame for it.
Now, I am in no way questioning that he is a leader in the room. He is the captain of this team for a reason, but I miss the way Iginla could take over a game. He could do it with a goal, a hit, or a fight. I just don't expect any amazing game changing plays (anymore) from Gio. He just makes a lot of good plays, and I want more.

It's funny that they essentially saying "AA is probably not going to be qualified" and "they are trying to move him". Unless a guy is hugely in demand, no one is going to trade an asset for a guy that will be UFA next week.

Edmonton pissed away two 2nd round picks on AA. That's so Edmonton.
AA has one great asset (that the Flames need). I can see why he'd be intriguing IF you could teach him some D. But if Tippet can't - who can (mind you, only a -1 under Tippet but also only 2 points in 13 games)?
Went back to the trade thread for the Athanasiou. Some true gems in there:

Another fail on BT's part. This guy is going to give us headaches for years to come.

Before I am comfortable stating that Giordano has lost a step or two (albatross is completely absurd), I would actually like to see the team play next season and see how the entire team does.
Did Giordano really lose a step this past season, or was it the same 'issue' that plagued most of the team's scoring? I don't know, but pretty much all the best players seemed to have 'lost a step'. I think whatever it was, Giordano was just affected by it just like everyone else.
I thought Giordano was playing atrocious in the playoffs, UNTIL the last few games. I thought he settled in and was playing as his usual (or at least, almost usual) self back there in the last handful of games. Call it nerves, rust, or just whatever... but I thought Giordano finished the playoffs strong.
I am betting that Giordano will still be Calgary's #1 defencemen this coming season, and not just by default either. I actually have zero worries about him. By the time his contract runs out, he will still be a borderline top pairing defencemen, but hopefully there will be someone to push him down to the 2nd pairing - that would be a good thing, not necessarily a necessity in my mind. I guess the proof will be in the pudding.
BTW, the QO is $3M for AA. That's over a quarter of the Oiler's space.
I suppose they may still choose to not qualify him and hope he signs a short-term deal for less, but he would be signing as a UFA at that point, so they would have no guarantee that he wouldn't go elsewhere.
It's looking increasingly likely that they will have to bridge Bear, who forced his way onto the top pairing and will be looking for a big raise.
