It's in Tkachuck interest to actually just negotiate a long-term deal with Calgary or request a trade before the season begins so he can sign a long-term deal elsewhere.

He can arbitrate too, but that would be dumb.

Is there even a chance the Gaudreau camp would circle back to the Flames? Pretty chocked to see Columbus in there. I am guessing he is only being offered in the low $9’s

It's basically between NYI/NJ at this point unless he wants to NOT play close to his family.
They just want to drive up the price because they know Columbus has like over 30 million of cap space with the only RFA being Patrik Laine to sign this summer and might make an offer that will making NJ or NYI up their offer out of panic.

Plus Johnny is scared of the cannon.

Maybe "a family decision" was "I want more money for my family"? Or, maybe Lewis Gross isn't very good with game theory.

Once the Flames inked Clark Bishop that door shut.

7x12... could they manage that salary?

"I need to move closer to home"
...moves further away. Wouldn't that just be a distinct kicking motion to the nads.

If he goes to Columbus what's the point?
Basically going to Calgary East who also lost their best players after being a competitive team prior.

New Jersey and Philly were 63 and 61 point teams last year. Johnny isn't enough to get them to the playoffs. And then add in the fact that they're offering less than Calgary. And then add in the fact that he likes Calgary. And then add in the fact that the locker room was tight.
The longer he looks at those other teams, the worse they probably look. The grass isn't greener on the other side. I can see why decision would have been so agonizing for him. The team is finally successful and he's going to one of the two worst teams in the league.

I just said to my wife. Johnny should fire his agent. Get a new one, and tell them to make a deal back in YYC.

If he wants to come back the offer drops to 7 x 9.5 now.

Devils is really miss-leading they had major goalie injuries last season (7 of them spent time)

Lots of assumptions there based on amounts being offered.
Plus, when accessing where you want to play based on future prospects, I like NJ's future quite a bit better than Calgary's right now.

But I thought New Jersey was a contender according to CP experts here
All kidding aside, Johnny and his agent likely overplayed their hand. Now they've probably realized that they may end up having to settle for a contract that pays much less than what Calgary is offering, just to have the luxury of being close to home. And I doubt he signs for Columbus or Seattle. He had a narrow list of teams for a reason, based solely on location preference.
