In Peel Region (Mississauga/Brampton) cops like to sit in plazas and stuff at intersections and take pics of drivers on their phones, and then pull them over.

Are we saying the same thing? Like, it's the guy driving slow in the left lane that is triggering multiple lane changes and frustration behind him, right? You're not suggesting the people who are being stymied by the bad driver in the left lane are the problem, are you?

I think that they are both a problem. The slow driver is causing the problem, but people driving crazy to get past them weaving in and out of traffic are also bad drivers.

What makes them bad drivers? It's not crazy to get up on somebody to move them over. Flash your brights a couple of times to wake them up, and then if those both fail pass them on the right. It's the left lane guy being a dope and a prick in that entire scenario.

Nothing wrong with calmly passing on the right, but weaving in and out like a maniac is reckless.

If someone is slow driving in the left lane you don't really just want to calmly pass them on the right. I do what it takes so they know I exist. If they move, good. If they don't,
at least they won't drift back over to the right as you pass. I don't trust poor drivers at all.

It kind of drives me nuts seeing that in movies and TV too.

"My cell phone is ringing, I better answer it!!"

And proceeds to fish the phone out of their pocket and start talking on the phone, like a phone, like a peasant.

Dude...you are driving a brand new Mercedes Benz are you funnin' me that you dont have hands free calling? Cuz I call Bull.

My car has hands-free calling. My last car, a 2010 Jeep had hands-free calling. WTF??

So your a creeper. You suck! If you want to leave a car and a half, commit to it. Don’t creep forward after the car behind you has come to a stop, making them look like the dork leaving all that space.

They’re teaching to leave 1 1/2 lengths till the car behind you comes to a stop, then creep forward? You sure it’s not just leave 1 1/2 and stay put?

Yeah, well they did at Young Drivers when I did it 20 years ago. That you can close the gap once the car behind you has stopped.

Leaving a 1 1/2 car lengths while stopped is absurd. I’ve seen maybe 1% of drivers do it (and I’m probably being incredibly generous) and they all look like strugglers who aren’t paying attention.

When I learned around 20 years ago I was taught to leave enough room to allow yourself space to move around the car in front in case it doesn't start moving again. It seemed like a reasonable amount of space and I generally still follow that.

That being said, I was part of a rear-end chain (I was the 3rd one rear-ended) where I sometimes wonder if more space in between cars would have prevented me from getting hit. Though I do have no idea how much distance was left between the cars behind me.

Gap when stopped people are lunatics. You. Are. Not. Getting. Rear. Ended. when there are 10 cars stopped behind you covering three blocks because it’s all strugglers leaving multi-car gaps. Move the F up you numbskulls!

Especially on a flat 50km/h road in July.

I generally go with the “leave enough space that you can see the front cars back tires” rule. Guessing that works out to ~6-8ft depending on the car your in? Always leaves me room to turn out of the lane if needed and should be enough to not pile into them in a “reasonable” rear ender. Without getting into the physics of it, if someone is smoking me so hard I’m skidding more than 8ft, not sure I’m in a condition to keep my foot on the brake hard enough that 18ft (1 1/2 car lengths?) is going to matter either. Car in front of me is going to have a bad day too.

That's what I was taught...nearly 30 years ago now. "Stop when the top of your hood appears to touch the bottom of the rear tires of the vehicle in front of you."
