Are Americans the new Russians? Maybe time to take a long hard look at Hanafin. His great contract, coupled with a few very solid seasons would get you a haul.

Honestly, the safest bet is to stick with Canadians and Europeans.

After sleeping on this, this news still sucks. Gaudreau ended up becoming one of my favorite Flames of all time. Up there with Fleury and Iginla. The fact that he left for nothing stings. A couple things however.
1. I don't think this team was going anywhere in the playoffs with Johnny as their franchise player. I don't think he has it in him to elevate his game much more for the playoffs.
2. His next contract could really ugly, real fast.
Ultimately, maybe this is what's best for the team. Take the 10 million allocated to Gaudreau and give out contracts to the players that want to be here. Maybe upgrade you #2 centre position and add a top 4 defenceman.
I still think this is a damn good team and we'll still compete for the top seed in the west.

Flames need more Canadian stars in their line-up. More Iginlas and Fleurys.
Bring in people who actually want to play for a small market Canadian team and be the big fish in a small pond.

The draft is a lottery, but the draft is also the building block of your team’s success. Teams that win Cups, generally speaking, win because of the stars they drafted.
The Flames went the opposite way. They tried to build through free agency and lots of mistakes were made that set the team back.
As I’ve said many times, I believe that the Brad Treliving rushed the rebuild. 2015 was just a mirage and management went all in on Monahan, Bennett and arguably Tkachuk. In hindsight, that wasn’t nearly enough pieces.
This team needed to continue building patiently, not trade away draft picks that could’ve been a Barzal, a Hintz, a Kyrou, a Debrincat and etc. This is how you build up necessary depth to be a contender in the NHL and that’s the blueprint this organization needs to follow in their next rebuild. No quick fixes, no jumping the gun, just be patient and build up your arms through the draft. In the end, it doesn’t have to be Bedard, whoever they do get, just please, let the team ripen naturally.

Great idea. Why not start with Point & Makar. Just… bring’um in!

Out of curiosity, is there a date by which RFAs must make their choice of signing their qualifying offers? Or is this the same idea as Nylander with the leafs a few years ago where he held out almost half the season?
I'm just trying to gauge a timeline for Tkachuk to either sign the QO or a separate offer and how that may impact the flames off season.

No idea when it is this year but recall it being Dec 31 in the past.

Once free agency begins and an RFA has not accepted his QO, he is eligible to accept offer sheets from other teams or he can choose to negotiate a better contract value (which happens the majority of the time)

There's indeed a deadline for any player contracting in the NHL to be under contract or they don't get to play for the year. It was either NYE or Dec 1 from what I remember.
EDIT - Looked like Willie Nylander signed literal minutes before the Dec 1 deadline.

July 22.
if he accepts, he can't negotiate a long term contract I believe until Jan 1, 2023, but that is based on memory.
That would make it difficult for the Flames to trade him for full value.

I think, as a Canadian franchise, you have to accept that almost no one wants to play here if they're given equal opportunity and money elsewhere. While there are rare exceptions, and some cities have an easier time dealing with this than others, I think it's consistent across the board for all 7 franchises

Out of thanks but man do I hope he signs an offer sheet (highly doubtful this would happen), either we'd get him at a great price or a hell of a return in draft picks. Tkachuk out for 2x firsts, a 2nd and a 3rd? I'd pack his curling iron and boot his ass outta here myself.
$6,302,230 – $8,402,975
1 First-Round Pick
1 Second-Round Pick
1 Third-Round Pick
$8,402,976 - $10,503,720
2 First-Round Picks
1 Second-Round Pick
1 Third-Round Pick

You bring a valid point but in this case it would make a lot more sense for Calgary to try and negotiate a choice say 2 Premium assets and maybe 2 lower assets then to take a lottery ball, given one of those 2 premium assets would most likely be a lottery ball and the acquiring team to bring in that 8th year.
I'll fill up the car.

I don't think it really matters. Every player is different, no matter where they come from. At the end of the day, Calgary isn't a city that is going to attract the majority of players. The Flames need to be an elite team, and that will attract and keep players. Draft the best players and build a winning team and culture, and you will keep guys.

They just won their division and I feel like they were on their way to building a winning culture. Their drafted star just bolted for home, and Tkachuk, also drafted, might do the same.

I assume this is just to try to maximize his offers from the teams in places he considers home, but he already played his hand.

This is pretty brutal...he is basically willing to go anywhere in the east after stringing the Flames along
Its not like he got an offer he couldn't refuse from his childhood team
