He has a house in Florida. Spends his offseason in Florida.

Guess where he wants to be. He’s in Vegas right now taking meetings. worst kept secret in the world- he was always going to UFA.

I thought at the time, and still think, it was a very neat bit of work by Conroy.

Chicago got free cap space from Santa Claus by getting to ditch the Perry contract. Vancouver grabbed the cap space by sending Beauvillier to Chicago. The Canucks needed a defenceman because of injuries, so Conroy pounced.

If Zadorov had been traded to any other team, it probably would have involved retention. Instead, most of the cap space from the Perry contract wound up in Craig Conroy's hip pocket. All it cost him was a pending UFA who was going to be a real headache to re-sign anyway.

I agree that it is probably Conroy's worst trade so far - and it still looks pretty damn good.

For my money, Conroy's worst trade was picking up Okhotiuk for a 5th. That's pretty small potatoes, but it's the only one so far that really didn't work out.

I think that's the only way it makes sense to sign him, and if that doesn't work for him then don't sign him, no big deal.

Obviously he'd prefer term and if someone gives it to him then that's awesome and wish him well. But I could see the Flames being top bidder on a 1 year. Maybe he'd rather have 1x5.5 than 4x3.0 when it comes down to it

5.5m one year, or guaranteed stability for your family for 4 years x3= 12M (His ask is way more than 3 million anyways). It's not hard to see why a player at 29 wants term after a solid playoffs he just had.

If Calgary were a contender then yes I think he would have been valuable for a run, but since they're nowhere near that then trading him was definitely the right move. A 3rd round pick three drafts away though is pretty underwhelming. Finding big guys that can actually play is rare. Finding big guys that can actually play and are tough and physical is really tough to find. Plus, he can chip in offensively. That is a big piece for a contender trying to make a run. I think Conroy definitely sold him at a discount.

Who else was taking Zadorov without retention at that point in the season? Half the league was in cap jail, and most of the other half wasn't trying to compete.

And didn’t his agent push zadorov out publicly as flames weren’t going to meet his salary or term expectations?

I seem to remember dressing room rumblings at the time and then kylington came back and we probably needed the roster room.
