Criticizing Catholicism was especially intense for Sinead, as she was Irish. At the time, Ireland still had lots of protestant/catholic conflict. For someone from the Republic of Ireland to publicly break rank with the Catholic Church was a big deal, as the Republic defined itself by its Catholic identity.
Mostly right. It really hadn't anything to do with the conflict but moreso the grip the Catholic Church had on the whole island of Ireland.
Sinead was my generation and we were brought up in a culture where the priest and the church could do no wrong and you dare not question.
We loved what she did. She reflected what we all thought. Our parents and the elders? She was going to hell for blasphemy.

She took up a very hard position for the time, especially considering the conflicts raging between Ireland and England and Ireland and Other Ireland.
The fact of the matter is that when it came to the Church she ate no BS and suffered no fools and history has proven her right.
But that came with suffering.

Yeah but I don't get the relevance of the especially considering the troubles bit.
For me it was simply more brave and relevant simply especially given the stranglehold the Catholic Church had on the island.
But what I was surprised by was the outlash in the US, particularly at a Dylan gig in NY. She got it far worse there than in Ireland. Driven in part by the hobbit Pelosi
In fact I don't recall any real outlash against her in Ireland. In a way it was the start of the end of the CC there. She was invited onto chat shows to warm welcomes. With people like Gay Byrne on Ireland's main chat show fathering her. In a way when she was being attacked. The celebrities of Ireland (Bono, Shane McGowan, Christy Moore) circled the wagons around her. Because they knew she was right.
Look at how vulnerable she is here less than a year post pope.
Was it a criticism to Christianity or the Catholic Church? I think it was the latter, which doesn’t really make her a hypocrite in that way.
Yeah, she was still a very vocal hardcore Christian. She even became an ordained priest in 1999 (obviously not with the Catholic Church).
So definitely not a hypocrite for not speaking out against Islam by any means. But I also think by this time she sort of didn't have a platform that anyone would take seriously anyways.
Like prior to her converting she had been open about her mental health struggles. She was bipolar, and then maybe she wasn't, she fought addiction, she had borderline personality disorder, she lost custody of her kids due to her mental health, she had become suicidal, she seemed paranoid and her Tweets were all very concerning (and straight up nonsense often). So when she was Tweeting how she hates all white people and stuff, it was pretty clear this was a battle with mental health that she had been struggling with for decades, don't really see why we should have been expecting to her end all religion conflicts at this point.
Damn. Pee Wee’s Big Adventure was a classic. I am glad he managed a bit of a comeback after his controversy. Nobody would probably bat an eye these days.

Large Marge is still terrifying and I will always believe that there is no basement in the Alamo. RIP Pee-wee.

####ing bummer, I remember waking up at 5:30AM every Saturday morning to watch cartoons and PeeWee's Playhouse was part of my lineup with the box of Cocoa Pebbles and TV tray setup.
My favorite thing he's done was Derek Foreal in "Blow".
Just read that he dated Debi Mazar, Sandy from Goodfellas. Nice.
Welcome aboard. This is Captain REX from the cockpit. I know this is probably your first flight and it's mine too. Ha ha. Well it looks like we'll have a smooth flight to Endor.

He played a lieutenant to the big bad vampire in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (film). He such a breath of fresh air in an otherwise mediocre movie. Still has one of my favorite lines of all time and the best death scene I can think of.
