Would be great to keep all 3 but could Monahan get you another pick in the top 3.

If you win the lottery you would for sure take Matthews. Say it's Columbus at number 2 - would they dangle the 2nd overall pick for Monahan. Helps them sooner and gives them a much needed center.

Then as the Flames you leave with Matthews and Laine who are both on ELC for 3 more years, cheaper, and you are now bigger on the wings, and potentially better at center ice as well.

There is a downside. You end up like Colorado where Paul Statsny left for free agency because he didn't see where he fit. The idea of three elite centers is good for the team, maybe not such a good opportunity for the player to maximize his value.

I'd want all three.
If this situation happens, Bennett is the one who plays on the wing. No way you play Monahan or Matthews anywhere but center.

This is the option in my mind. You keep all three for a minimum of Matthews ELC and win.

I would however, Be very intrigued on what a pay out to drop down to say third would be.

projected 1st rounder Tyler Benson is done for the season due to injury.

Will be interesting to see if his stock drops because of this

Well Morgan Reilly missed almost his entire draft year and the Leafs had him rated #1 despite that. Galchenyuk also missed almost his entire draft year and was ranked #1 by Calgary. Brett Connolly missed almost his entire draft year as well and went top 10.

Injuries don't generally drop players unless it's the type of injury that would affect their career. With today's surgeries there isn't many of those type of injuries. The scouts will have seen Benson enough to have strong opinions on him. Don't forget too that scouts often haven seen these kids the year before their draft as well.

Those are top prospects though, Benson wasn't rated as a top 10 guy and wasn't even first round by some. I could see this making him slide a little.

Time to pump Mike McLeod's tires up a bit. Speed speed speed! Has a wicked shot.

Michael McLeod is a highly skilled power center that relies on nobody but himself to get the job done. His size and skating make him difficult to contain, and his competitiveness gives him an edge against other teams' best. His deft puckhandling skills and control over his speed are the defining aspects of his offensive abilities. All-in-all, a top talent that is both dynamic and hard to play against. 56 points in 50 gp so far in Missisauga. I wouldn't mind at all if the Flames went all in on Steelhead players in rounds 1 and two this year. Grabbing one of McLeod/Nylander and Sean Day.

Then you keep Matthews and move Monahan or Bennet. I'd be inclined to move Monahan. The Leafs might even part with their first-rounder for him.

Exactly. The Flames draft Matthews and the next day Monahan and Bennet are talking to their agents about what this means for their futures.

You can get Laine, Puljujarvi, or (Marner+Tkachuk/Chychrun/etc) for Monahan and you have Matthews/Bennett...

That'd be nice.

I'd be eyeing Tage Thompson for that spot otherwise. A 6'5, R shooting C/RW with bloodlines and 28P in 32GP in the NCAA.

Some scouts are very concerned about his offensive upside. Some scouts see him as a surefire speed demon 2nd line centre but some think he could top out as more of a speedy 3rd line checking centre.

Due to the questions about his offensive upside I don't think he'd be in contention for our pick. We need surefire top two line players or top 4 d-men and those are available in the top 10 for sure. Great prospect but doesn't quite fit our needs IMO. We're deep at centre so I wouldn't take another top 10 this year unless it's Matthews. Size on the wing or another top 3 d-man is what I would be going this draft based on what's available and our needs.

Scenario:

Flames win draft lottery. Draft sequence is 1. Flames 2. Sabres 3. Leafs.

Flames trade Monahan to Leafs for 3rd overall pick. Draft Matthews and Puljujarvi.

Gaudreau/Matthews/X
X/Bennet/Puljujarvi

Not bad.

I remember Benson completely lighting up the league before he was drafted into the the WHL. He was breaking Rattie's records from the years before.

He really hasn't progressed much, if at all, since then. On top of that, he has had a season-ending injury.

I think he might be a case of the ol "being larger than everyone else before, but then having the competition catch up".

Wait. Let me get this straight. You trade Monahan for another pick hoping you'll get a player that might develop into 30 goal scorer? Did someone change a DNS record to redirect this site to HF? Or have a few of you gone hype happy?

And maybe one day Senyshyn will be as good as Dougie Hamilton....

Or you know, not.

I know this is OT, but that still blows my mind. The trade aside (which was horrible for Boston), taking Senyshyn over Barzal was unbelievable. At least trade down a few spots if you love Senyshyn so much ...

That also brings us to the Oilers decision to trade for Reinhart instead of taking Barzal or Connor. Hilarious stuff, really. E = NG.
