What if you think Laine or Puljujarvi is as good as Matthews but know another team will give up assets and there lottery to get their Franchise center?

I think you can add Columbus to Arizona for teams that would move Heaven and Earth to get Matthews.

We can just as easily fall to 4th last or 3rd last.

BUF looks like a better team with return of their #1 goalie Lehner who missed most of the season
CBJ is on better form than we are right now
WPG? We may outsuck them the rest of the way too

What do you think the Flames record will be the rest of the way? you tell me that and we can use sportsclubstats.com to give us the proababilities of where we finish

yeah, there are going to be a lot of disappointed Laine and Puljujarvi fans on this board on lottery day.

We are able to fall to those spots, but we won't.

@FDW

That is a really good question. I guess it will depend on the returns from deadline day. If we lose a couple of key veterans we may find ourselves dropping. If we don't, we may earn a few spoiler points along the way. I see eight games that I think we should win, another couple that could be iffy, and then 10 losses. I guess we could see a record of 6-10-4 down the stretch, again depending on departures. Maybe Treliving does us a solid and dumps all the vets, then we could really take a swan dive and catch Buffalo and Winnipeg. Edmonton and Toronto are just in a class by themselves when it comes to suckage, so I can't see us catching either of them.

BUF is tied with us on points already and just got their #1 goalie back. We do have 2 games in hand but they could easily pass us.

I'll pick a few records from sporstclubstats to illustrate
http://www.sportsclubstats.com/NHL/W...c/Calgary.html (scroll to bottom)

Let's say we go .500 which I think might be a touch optimistic.
10-10-3: 28% chance of finishing 6th, 36% chance of finishing 5th, 21% chance of finishing 4th

9-12-2: 16% chance of finishing 5th, 36% chance of finishing 4th, 33% chance of finishing 3rd, 10% chance of finishing 2nd

7-13-3: 10% chance of finishing 4th, 35% chance of finishing 3rd, 42% chance of finishing 2nd, 12% chance of finishing last!

The table they have up is pretty interesting. While I think finishing below the Leafs or Oilers is not going to happen several of the teams around us seem to be on the upswing while we seem to be on the downswing even before we sell off assets at the deadline.

This is the dream scenario IMO: Flames win the lottery, Arizona wins 3rd (or 2nd).

Would ARI be willing to move Duclair to get to #1?

Flames walk away from the draft with Pullyergoalie and Duclair, and suddenly RW is set.

I am not moving Matthews for a Finn. Matthews > Monahan and Bennett

The only team that should move Matthews if they win the lottery is Edmonton. Trade him to Arizona for their 1st and OEL

Don't disagree there, but is Matthews/Monahan/Gaudreau/Bennett better than Monahan/Gaudreau/Bennett/Duclair/Pulujarvi?

I'm not so sure

Kind of depends what sweetener they add doesn't it? ARI has a crapton of great prospects and could afford to deal a top one to move up.

Is Matthews > Laine + Dvorak?
Is Matthews > Puljujarvi + Duclair?

http://www.tsn.ca/tsn-hockey-s-top-5...pects-1.436669

ARI has 5 of the top 50 prospects according to Craig Button. They have the assets to make a tempting offer to move up.

I am. Especially with the fact that neither Bennett nor Monahan have actually proven they are going to develop into a Kopitar-calibre #1C. Matthews is by far your best bullet in the chamber for that class of franchise center(and projects closer to Malkin territory). I'm still scarred from those two playoff series we lost to pretty much Datsyuk and Thornton single-handedly.

Does Arizona have any say in this?

Strange conversation. In my opinion, taking Matthews is a no brainer. As Senor Fletcher mentioned above, Matthews/Bennett would be stronger than Monahan/Bennett and trading Monahan would send you any winger you want in the entire league, and a 1st (and allow you to protect Matthews for a year before you put Monahan on the block). Take Matthews and deal with the fallout later.

Yeah, if we win Matthews I'm either moving Bennett to the wing or dangling Monahan to see what he'd net in a trade.

I don't think the Yotes would trade Duke and the 2nd overall to draft Matthews. That seems like an overpayment to me.

I think they offer their 32nd pick and if no trades happens, then they pick one of the Fins

Just for fun, what do you think we can get for Mony? What teams would be in the bidding?

Is moving Matthews to the wing not an option too?

I'd want all three.

I would be interested in seeing the number comparable between kopitar and Monahan this year. Now not saying they are equal as Kopitar is one of my favorites in the league but still.

I imagine there would be plenty of teams bidding. My preference would be a young right shot right winger who's already established himself as an NHLer. Obviously teams with weak and/or aging center depth would be high on the list of suitors. Gallagher maybe? Mark Stone?

It'd be a great problem to have that's for sure. If we had those three in the fold I'd also hate to see any of them go.
