I hope you are right (and you are an insider so you are more likely to be than I would be). I am hoping Conroy gets as much term as possible, 8 years for each of them would be ideal. I personally could care less about how much, care way more about term.
I would be fine with all of them getting 8% of next years cap (assuming a 93 million dollar cap that would be around 7.5 million each). Not say they should get the same number but I could care less about the number. In 4 years with where the cap is likely going that would end up being 6.5% of the cap in the middle of their contracts and dropping.
Carolina basically did the same thing. Jarvis signed for 8.43% of cap value at the start of his contract, already looks like a steal and is going to be below 7% of cap value in a couple years. Svechnikov signed for 9.3% of cap value and has proven to be a good contract. Even Kotkaniemi signed for 5.84% of cap value and looks like he will be a 40 point forward and soon making under 5% of cap value. Carolina's balance sheet looks so good beacuse they signed a third of their roster to longterm contracts banking on the salary cap continuing to rise at a rapid rate.

The problem is the Flames are missing 3 top line forwards in the pipeline to be an elite team.
And top line forwards don't grow on trees.
|
Everyone's definition of top line seems to be different, but I think you are right but really it is more they are missing a franchise center in the pipeline.
I really don't see many teams that have 3 forwards that are substantially better than a guy like Coronato or Zary projects to be.
Carolina - Aho, Svechnikov and Rantanen?
Florida - Barkov, Tkachuk and Reinhart - 100% this group
Toronto - Matthews, Marner and Nylander - 100% this group
After that, 3rd forward on any other team isn't that much better than what Coronato or Zary could be.

First Line Centre

I think people tend to overrate their own prospects by a wide margin.
I can see 2nd line for Coronato, but if you are playing him top line you probably have a bad team. He has a great shot, but still only on pace for around 20.
I like him, but I like him as a 2nd liner.

That's a high bar, what they "could be".

Cole Reinhardt on waivers in Ottawa today. 24 and born in Calgary. I think that he is a better fourth line option than Klapka, Rooney, Hunt... everybody not named Lomberg. Has scoring touch, and sandpaper.

Rather the Flames call up one of their own Cole Reinhardts.

Was/ is mangiapane a 2nd liner or a really good 3rd liner? I think the latter but I can see some argument for the former.
Flashes of elite skill arent really enough in the nhl, its about consistency. I hope Coronato has as good a growth curve as Mangiapane over the next year, but I am not sure I really see more than that, and to me that's not a top line player, but a really good complimentary piece.
|
Mangiapane, in his 21-22 year old season (2017-2018) played in the AHL and had 0 points in 10 NHL games. In his 23-24 year old season he had 32 points in 68 games (17 goals)
Coronato, in his 21-22 year old season (current season) is on pace for 20 goals and 23 assists.
They are not comparable, Coronato is wayyyy better

The presence of 1 franchise center can also change the perception of the players we have. A guy like Necas seems like a solid player in Carolina but could be a 100-point guy in Colorado.
Give Coronato a high-end skilled center with high end speed and watch him score 30-40 goals. He will be considered a first liner then.

That's what Klapka was supposed to be, but he's soft as butter.
Stromgren isn't a fourth line player, neither is Kerins.
I'm not sure if Calgary has this guy in the system, but they do have a Popesil and a Lomberg on the main team.

Coronato is in his early stages still. Guy has an elite shot. You can't teach that. He can beat goalies from a distance. Rest of his game needs to keep improving. If it does he is a top line scoring winger.
Jarome Iginla wasn't an instant 40 plus goal scorer as well. He was a 20 goal guy his first couple seasons.
It takes time.

Brandt Clarke potentially available? What does LA need in the short term? That would be one heck of a get, granted not a huge organizational need right now, but talent is talent.

Weekes leaning into the Clarke thing and saying he's in a Elias Petterson package.

I like Clarke but how is that a key need for the Canucks. They have two offensively minded guys already in Hronek and Hughes.

Why would that be exactly what Vancouver is looking for?
Byfield and Clarke for Pettersson and Hronek
