As for the last bit, if you wanted the maximum amount of area zoned as possible, with the least amount of roads, would you have a grid where on one side that little bar appears halfway in the gap, and on the other side the bar meets it? It would mean you would have less Sims and slower growth, but would work well for planning as each high density only needs one road access on one side?

There is a high density avenue with streetcar, so that would obviously handle more traffic since you are adding mass transit to the equation. I'm not positive about traffic. Would likely have to compare number of lanes. If high density street and high density avenue has the same number of lanes, I would expect it to handle the exact same amount of traffic.
I would assume so, but I don't know for sure. Having the bar meet in the middle would maximize high density building space so it makes sense.
Edit: Looking at Kel's link, looks like HD avenues have 6 lanes, while HD streets have 4 lanes. So traffic would likely flow better over a HD avenue, but you can get the same type of buildings out of a HD street.

I tried it. Definitely throws a wrench into planning. The cliff creates traffic bottlenecks and reduces the amount of space you have for zoning.

I actually enjoyed it, as it allowed for a physical separation of residential/commercial and industrial. The 1 hour limit probably didn't allow enough time for the long term issues with that design to rear its ugly head, but it would definitely be a lot more challenging than a flat map.

smaller too. i'm actually seriously considering this card for my next GPU upgrade because of all those factors. i currently have two GTX 460's, and it's such a pain in the ass to work on anything inside my case with those two behemoths taking up so much room. my next upgrade will strictly be single GPU, i'm done with SLI

I would be a fan because I only run a 750-watt PSU, so being able to strictly upgrade just the GPU would be stellar.

A guy in the UK used the beta to replicate his city's street layout in order to analyze traffic problems...well, not really, he did it just for fun but with surprising results:

I'm in shock that they actually made the decision to use such small maps. Jesus. Once you see them like that its quite sobering.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Do you mean the region maps?
These are not all the same land area. Some of them are pretty massive while some are quite small.

Yeah those are the regions. Their names and the number city sites in brackets are above each.
The largest region at launch in terms of land area is 16 km x 16 km (256 square kilometers). I know that a few months ago they were playing around with making 32 km x 32 km (1024 square kilometers) regions as well so don't be surprised if you see that at some point (possibly in conjunction with larger cities when they come along).

Not for ship.
Based on what I've read, they felt that with current city sizes it didn't make a lot of sense.
That said, one of the first things demonstrated on the GlassBox engine was a farm.
I would expect to see it later on when cities and regions become larger.
I personally feel that there is a lot of room for farming to become a specialization with different city sites having different suitability for crops, then like grain elevators and such. (I feel like they could also do a biofuels thing with this if they wanted.)
