As a Canucks fan, I'm thankful that Phaneuf is gone from the Flames. He was an intimidating presence on the blueline. Ian White may bring as much offense as Dion does, but he isn't as good defensively. Last night the Sedins had an easy time skating past him in the third period.
But I do think the Flames did well to get Hagman and Stajan to upgrade the scoring. Its clear Sutter is trying to win now because its likely that none of these guys will be around in five years.
This is a tough one to digest for a lot of reasons, many of which have been covered already.
My initial thoughts were those of horror and disgust as my favorite Flame was traded. But that's personal, nothing to do with the Flames.
As far as the Flames go, I am leaning in favour of liking this deal. Undoubtedly improves us on the front end, and really doesn't make us that much worse on the back-end either. If Ian White re-signs, even better.
I kind of have the feeling that Phaneuf has reached his ceiling. The player we saw this year is the player Phaneuf is. Nothing wrong with that, he's still damn good. But with an already loaded defense, the Flames had the luxury to make this move.
I like the look of this team with the players we acquired.

Sutter did not get fair trade value in return for Phaneuf. After one year this trade could be a disaster.
Basically Phaneuf, Sjostrom, Aulie.
for Hagman and White.

So assuming Dion wasn't a problem in the dressing room. I guess it must have been his contract for Sutter to ship him out of town. and who can we blame for that?
KLowe and his stupid Vanek/Penner offer sheet from the year before. If he didn't tender those ridiculous amounts there is no way Phaneuf would have gotten $6.5mill/year.
After doing some thinking, I actually like this deal.
Phaneuf has been on the decline (offensively) the last couple of years.
If we didn't make this trade, I doubt the Flames would make the playoffs. Now, with some upgrades in offense, we have a great shot at the playoffs and possibly going deep.
I think being in a salary cap changes everything about having franchise players. Yes, we need to have a few to make a great team (and we already do Iggy, Kipper). But anymore, and we are not using $$ effectively.
With 6.5 million dollars, we can get the equivalent if not more than what Phaneuf provides.
Hagman, Stajan and White>>>Phaneuf (this year)
6.5 million equivalent=/>Phaneuf (future)

I've always liked hagman a lot - I remember thinking GREAT pick up by the leafs. Spector I think rightly says that the loss of Hagman from the Stars has had bigger negative effect on the Stars than most people realize. If Hagman, or all the players in this trade, were coming from the Stars (or any other team other than the leafs), I think more people would be happy with this return for underachieving Phaneuf. The fact that it was the leafs taints these players for some reason, even though I actually think these were some of the only actual bright spots for that franchise. They could flourish in Calgary.
Keeping in mind that this gives calgary flexibility to make more moves makes in a potentialyl pretty good deal in my mind - but I guess only time will really tell.

Unless sutter has plans for the $$$ he saves in this deal, we could very well end up wiht hagman as the only peice left over from this deal this summer (PUKE).
this trade makes the flames a better team THIS season, and this season only.

I agree with you that this improves our chances at the play offs this year as I don't think we would have made it without this deal, but you have to be out too lunch if you actually think this team can go on a deep run. Stajan is nothing more than a 3rd liner and White is not an upgrade at defence. Hagman is a solid 2nd liner but nothing more. I think Sutter could have gotten a way better deal to help this team in the future. Like you said the cap space will help but where will it be spent? This is a short term deal just like most of Sutters trades lately where he completely screws our future. This deal barely gives us any cap releif for this season and next , Stajan and Mayers are UFA and White is RFA. What will Sutter spend this cap space on? We are still missing our number 1 center and we lost our best all around defenceman. Couple this with the Jokinen disaster of a trade and the Flames future looks grim at best. Sutter plugged a couple holes for this season but created more for next season. No first round pick this June makes me sick and these our the reasons I think Sutter should be fired.
I guys this just shows what Phaneuf is worth in the Market... not much.. Happy we got rid of him...but don't think we got much out of him. Hopefully this moves takes us to the cup.
Looking forward to seeing Hagman's Wife around the dome.

Wow I guess now I know why I couldnt access CP at all yesterday.
Havent read a single post yet, it should be fun (Sutter WILL NOT trade Dion, eh?).
For what its worth, I liked Dion (never thought he was a semi-god thought, he's got holes in his game, but who the hell doesn't) so this trade feels like a punch in the stomach.
Initally not happy with this trade at all, but I guess Phaneuf really was the bad apple and had to go? Who knows...
