You would pretty much need the equivalent of 4 firsts in that scenario because Benn is nothing more than a bad contract cap dump at this point and you’d need to give a first just for a team to take on that deal.
2023 1st
Bourque
Harley
Stankoven
Benn
Then sure Sure.

Wasn't Stamkos their #1C this year?
Point would be amazing but I don't see it happening unless they love Tkachuk, didn't like Point's production over the last two seasons for a $9.5milAAV player (0.85 PPG), are comfortable having Stamkos and Cirelli as their 1-2 with Paul as their #3C, and see it as an amazing chance to get a unicorn player before Point's NMC kicks in 2023-24.

How does a team that has went to three straight finals winning two and losing one need a retool.
Even in the one they lost they might win with a healthy Brayden Point.
Point has been a much, much better playoff producer than Tkachuk too.

Those are very good arguments in favour.

All the more reason Dallas should give us a ransom to make this deal happen.
People, the NHL players we get back in this deal… We’re going to hate them. They’re going to be serviceable at best.
We are not getting a player of equal stature, and we shouldn’t be looking for one. After Tkachuk leaves, our best forward is Elias Lindholm.
What can you do when Elias Lindholm is your best player? It’s no indictment of Lindy, he’s terrific.
He’s not a top-10 player. He’s not a top-20 player. He finished 27th in scoring, so by at least one metric he’s a top-30 player. Though he won’t have his linemate next season, who finished 2nd and 8th in league scoring.
What can you do in the NHL with one top-30 player?
You can finish last.

You can sign an 8 year deal with any team you're with prior to the trade deadline of that season.
|
I'm not certain that's actually true...I think it's the previous TDL.
Quote:
(iv) An SPC with a term of greater than seven (7) years, provided, however, that a Club may sign a Player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years if that Player was on such Club’s Reserve List as of and since the most recent Trade Deadline. With respect to potential Unrestricted Free Agents only, the ability to re-sign a Player to an SPC of eight (8) years expires when the Player becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent. With respect to a Player who becomes a Group 2 Restricted Free Agent, a Club may sign such Player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years provided such Player was on such Club’s Reserve List and/or Restricted Free Agent List as of and since the most recent Trade Deadline.
|
I read that as only CGY can do 8 years...
Fiala only got 7 yrs with LAK...

DAL won’t be able to fit Tkachuk’s contract without moving Benn or Seguin, either as part of the deal, or in a side deal (which effectively increases the cost of acquiring Tkachuk by the assets DAL would have to give up to unload the contract).

I know it’s worrisome but what bothers me more is, outside of a couple years after the Iggy era, we have been trying to win and be a playoff team. The success we have had in that time is not anything to get excited about.
You build through the draft so you need to pick near the top or hope to get lucky in the later rounds.
If the upcoming draft is as good as it’s touted to be this is a good time to load up on picks and young players/prospects for our aging vets.
I’m not talking a total tear down, I’m more thinking along the lines of what NYR have done. Keep key players that are still a reasonable age but sell off the guys that will be better served on a contender for the next couple seasons and pick high for 2-3 seasons.
I realize it might not end up that way but that is less of a risk in my eyes over continuing to think we are anywhere close to being good enough to beat the top teams in the West.
|
I agree with nearly everything you say. But we don't need to trade 2nd and 3rd round picks to make the playoffs each year. In the example I used from this season the LA Kings made a few minor deadline tweaks mainly to shore up injuries. The Flames can try to follow the same model.
As for NYR, I can guarantee you that's a team that intends to make the playoffs every single season. I don't think they were intentionally terrible when they picked high, and the Flames may well follow the same path. (Very few teams except maybe ARZ or BUF have blown their team up so doggedly.)
So long story short, the Flames can still try to be competitive without playing loose with higher round picks. And they may well prove to be terrible anyway and get some high picks. But I don't want them to give up on competing otherwise why would I watch the games?

Pretty sure he can sign an 8 year contract as long as he's in the roster before the trade deadline. Look at Mark Stone for an example.

That Benn contract could cost two first round picks just on its own to unload. If Marleau was one first round pick to unload a 6 million dollar contract coming off a 37 point and 47 point season, unloading 3 years of 9.5 million for a guy with only slightly better numbers would have to be two first rounders I would think.

He was on a one year contract and traded at the deadline. That would be like trading Tkachuk this upcoming deadline.

I could see the Devils as the trade. Isn’t New Jersey’s GM cousins with Keith Tkachuk? NJ has the cap, assets and their GM is literally family of the Tkachuk’s.

I hope nobody wants Benn because they think he's still a good player or has any kind of future.
He'd be a cap dump. The Flames would need a bunch of picks and prospects to take Benn back.
