Nucks fans are saying he is good at getting the puck out of the D Zone so for me that's a huge improvement over Hamonic right there. He was atrocious at zone exits in the last half of that contract.

I decided to re-watch some of the playoff Canuck games to watch Tanev in particular. I started with game one vs. STL today. Tanev looked good, yet both of the STL goals ended up because of his mistakes. First of all Tanev looked much better than any of the Flames defenseman in board battles, and in clearing the front of the net. He is also a much better skater than Hamonic. I would actually compare him to Hanifin in terms of skating.

He does have weird positioning. I don't know if it is by design, or because he likes to block shots. His positioning resulted in the first STL goal, where he screened Markstrom on the PK. Also, he definitely seemed like he was trying to cover for Hughes on a lot of the entries, into the Vancouver zone. It's almost as though he expects Hughes to get walked when he stands the blue line.

All in all game 1 vs STL was a very good game for Tanev. His biggest mistake was trying to keep the puck in the offensive zone, which resulted in a break away and a goal against. Aside from that, and his positioning he was very solid, despite the Canucks not playing a great team defense.

Didn't Tanev score in OT like 11 seconds in? I can't remember.
Edit: yes he did! He doesn't walk the line very often though, he usually just throws the puck in deep from what I can remember. That's why Tanev doesn't have many shots.

Spoiler

Tanev scores OT series winner 11 seconds into OT

How many Flames have playoff OT series winners? zero I'm guessing unless Lucic has one

(well I guess Tanev so that's one)

Neither one on a 4 year contract. Would have preferred Barrie for his term and collar figure.

I actually wouldn't want Hamonic on the team even at league minimum. He just didn't gel here. I won't say he is a terrible player, but perhaps he was just a terrible fit. Love the guy and how good of a teammate he was, but just seemed to be a poor fit.

I only asked because you were complaining about age...Brodie is the same age.

Barrie is terrible defensively and obviously went to Edmonton to put up massive PP numbers and get a big contract without having to worry about D

Highly doubt that player/contract was available to the Flames, nor did I want it but you are welcome to your opinion

He really shouldn't play...if he bailed on the Flames since the bubble was too dangerous there is no scenario that he should be playing and travelling this season. If his reasons were legit then they are even more legit now.

Otherwise its about $

Almost nobody opted out, Green? who has already retired

As a fan group I think this type of talk needs to disappear. You know as well as everyone else that his really young daughter was born with issues and the fear of picking something up and bringing it home could really put her at risk. Nobody knew if they were going to be there for 2 weeks or 2 months and whether someone else could be careless and bring something into the bubble.

This comment is just poor taste to make yourself feel better.

I would take Hamonic back at 2x2 no questions asked.

I strongly disagree...the bubble was incredibly safe, safer than what you and I are contending with there was zero risk. Guy would have been tested daily with instant results. How exactly would his daughter been in any danger?

He was 100% free to opt out though...but IF he were to sign a contract now and play in a far more risky environment how does that even make sense?

I feel fine thanks

He stated the obvious. No way Hamonic plays in a non bubble environment and therefore he shouldn't be in play in free agency. He can offer up his services in 2021-2022 free agency if things get back to normal.

Maybe he wanted to be at home with his at risk daughter and he didn’t question the safety of the bubble at all?

But he’s a bad guy for choosing family over hockey.

When the bubble was created who knew how safe it’d be? Especially one in Edmonton. Some people were way more sceptical than others.

Now, maybe Hamonic will have watched and also lived through the last few months outside the bubble and me might just have changed his mind about the danger. Or not. But if he comes back it doesn’t mean it was just about money.

I absolutely respect his decision and he was well within his rights to do what he did. I also respect the decisions of the other players who played sacrificing time away from family and who had their own family health issues to consider and dealt with it by quarantining themselves.

It's interesting we have heard exactly nothing. As Dino said, based on Hamonic's reasoning, maybe he has made it known he's not playing although you'd think word of that would have leaked out. Or maybe he's changed his mind since now it would cost him money and there is just little interest in this player.

Lots of hindsight going on here. Who woulda known ahead of time how safe the bubble was going to be?

I’m happy to hear is skating is excellent. That suggests he could age like a Brodie rather than a Hamonic. Encouraging, for sure.
