Right, but up until noon they were in talks. Pre-Markstom discussion.

Has it been reported or speculated what the Flames offered Brodie, or is it still just guesses?

I think it was Bingo that speculated some pages back that the difference may have been the NMC for the expansion draft.

With how tight the Flames are to the cap already with the anticipated signing of Mangiapane, you have to think it wasn’t much more than what Tanev got. So it’s possible that the Leafs offer was $500k more.

It’s pretty clear to me that a lot of the “we’re still in on Brodie” talk was, which while not a lie because Brodie could have called them back, not a reflection of reality. They were focused on Markstrom, and Brodie left. It is also highly probable that Brodie’s Calgary price was significantly higher than his Toronto price. So Brodie v. Tanev is a false comparison. Assuming Brodie wasn’t coming here short of $6M or so, Treliving ended up with (a) the best goalie on the market and (b) the best defenceman under $5M.

I see the follow up in a different thread that they had shifted focus to Markstrom first, so I was clearly wrong.

Even if not, I’m sure Brodie kept Calgary as an option if for some wild reason, Toronto talks fell through. But that’s not really being in the mix, it’s just not slamming the door.

I feel this quote from TJ should've been a thread title with all the fans butt hurt because Treliving didn't re-sign Brodie.

Didn't we try to trade Brodie twice, once for Kadri and I thought there was another at least rumored Brodie deal.

Brodie was/is fine but some people are framing it like he was a defensive wizard and a game changer. IMO Brodie was an adventure during his time here in Calgary, great at points and GD awful at other points.

We get emotionally attached to players, and I get that, but we will be fine without Brodie. He wasn't going to prop up Gio, if Gio is in significant decline that's a whole other issue.

That isn't saying that he had hard feelings. And it doesn't imply that he wouldn't sign with Calgary (in fact, negotiations continued).

All it is saying is that he knew there was interest from Toronto, and it is nice to be wanted, to go to a team that has targeted him for some time.

Players understand that trades happen.

I would have preferred Brodie over Tanev but I don't think that was ever a legitimate option. At the end of the day Brodie was hot and cold so losing him isn't the end of the world. Hopefully Tanev can bring a strong defensive game and win the fans over.

I was never a huge TJ fan although I warmed towards the end. I actually thought Hamonic brought more... so that’s me as a talent evaluator. But I ate my crow.

I’m hoping I’m just as wrong about the Tanev signing, but all the flags are there - age, underlying numbers, the leadership and veteran pitch, the intangibles. Sounds like a sell to me.

It’s signings like this, and Brouwer and Neal etc why we can’t have nice things. He doesn’t suck, he’s a serviceable player but I think this will come back and bite Treliving.

A buddy of mine is a hardcore Canucks fan, this was his input on Tanev.

"Great partner for Gio or Hanifin. Rock solid defensively. Blocks a ton of shots so gets hurt at least once a year. Great first pass, great shot supression, decent skater. Can definitely be a partner for an offensive guy or part of a shutdown pairing. Edler, Hughes both loved playing with him. Doesn't have a big shot but he's always smart with the puck.

You're gonna love him and be super upset when he gets hurt. The annual Tanev 10-20 game injury always resulted in our season going down the ####ter. I doubt we can replace him. "

I don’t know much about Tanev.

Is this an upgrade or downgrade on Brodie? Or a little of column A and a little of column B with regards to offence and defence?

Brodie is better offensively, Tanev is better defensively.

The best description, might be that Kris Russell is a dollar store version of Tanev. Russell was all heart all the time and blocked a ton of shots, Tanev also does this but while being significantly better at other aspects of the defensive game.

Better defensively, slightly worse offensively

I think the best way to think of it is an upgrade on Hamonic.

Downgrade on Brodie, but IF he can channel his best self (huge if) he is still a top pairing / top 3 defenseman. I'd compare him to Hjalmarsson maybe.

I'm still pretty skeptical of this contract largely due to the players age. But I think it's clear that Treliving thinks he needs a Hamonic style player in the group. Tanev does bring some of that and hopefully can recoup some of his game from seasons past.

I would have preferred a shorter term stop gap but this is what Treliving chose.

Did you want Brodie back?

I actually really like this deal...but when Hamonic signs for 2 x3M...I think there will be a legitimate discussion on what is the better value. I like Tanev better than Hamonic...but at +2 years and +1.5M....not sure.

It was time to move on from Hamonic, regardless of what he signs for.

'A better Russell' is a pretty good description of Tanev, IMO.
