Nothing to apologize for.

It's an uninformed observation, I admit. Just hypothesizing -- and I'm not the only one to reach this conclusion based off Francis' post.

It's not that it's as simple as just meeting in the middle, it's that a number near the middle just seems to make a lot of sense given the closest comparable (Tarasenko's contract adjusted for the extra RFA year).

I hope Kucherov signs soon so we can get another comparable and hopefully narrow the Johnny-Brad gap.

I am not sure that there is anything earth shattering in what Francis is saying. It's pretty much what the consensus around here has been for weeks no?

I am not concerned in the least. I think, just like the Monahan contract this will be done and will be fair but will not be a steal for us. I just hope that we can somehow manage the cap Moving forward with Brodie, Hamilton, Gio, Bennett, Tkachuk, Monahan, Johnny and one solid starter.

Are they really 1.5 million apart?I just saw the a picture of the Calgary Sun and I'm assuming Francis wrote the article. So what the Flames are offering 6.5 and he's wanting 8? if so, OUCH!

Is Lewis Gross the agent that's been known to be very difficult to deal with in the past for other players?

Don't think so.

His bigger name clients include Martin St. Louis and Brandon Saad.

Gaudreau is/will be one of the biggest contracts Gross will be part of so far:

list of past and current clients:
http://www.spmsports.com/clients

Most of his clients are low profile players that came from the NCAA.

Conroy's old agent. Hopefully that's a good thing.

According to the Francis article the Flames are looking for $6.5M per and Gaudreau wants $8M. Meet in the middle at $7.25 and get it done!!

First off, I'm glad we finally have some news. And it is basically what I expected. Why wouldn't the agent ask for the moon and more?

Secondly, I am ecstatic to see the Flames are offering exactly what I would offer. I think it would be quite easy to structure a deal where he is making fair RFA money, and during the UFA years he is making $7.5MM.

Why give away $750,000 per season, if you are the Flames? That's $750,000 that can be used to retain a guy like Bennett, Tkachuk or Elliot.

Personally, I think $7.25/year on a long term deal is fair market value. In 4 or 5 years, it will probably seem like a bargain in fact. I have no doubt the Gaudreau is going to be a top 5 scoring forward for several years, barring injury.

If we pay him $6.5 million, I don't think we get a long deal, and his next contract will probably be higher than $7.5 million. I would rather dilute the cap hit by overpaying him a little now and making it a long term deal.

I.have expressed these thoughts in Bingo's thread but I would rather pay that $750K to keep Gaudreau for the max term than pay that extra money on bringing in UFA's like Brouwer or Frolik who in my opinion are at least $750k overpaid or a guy like Bouma, Stajan, Engellend, Wideman, Smid, Bollig are all the other overpaid bottom tier players on the roster.

My thoughts are if Gaudreau eventually caves to the Flames 6.5 we won't see the contract go longer than 6 years and I would rather give him $750k-$1.5M more per season to buy those other 2 UFA years.

The Flames got the equivalent of an elite 1st overall pick in the 4th round. They have to keep that player for as long as possible. If the Flames struggle to sign Bennett, Tkachuk, or Gillies in the future it won't be Johnny's contract that is the reason we can't afford to keep them

They are going to have to move off that number at least a bit. No way Gaudreau signs for 6.5m unless it's for 5 years imo. I think it's going to be 7 years $50m for a $7.14m cap hit.

I'm a little surprised this is where they are at after a summer of negotiation. This is what I believed the opening position would be for both sides.

Most reasonable speculation I have seen is that fair value is somewhere in the low 7's. Maybe one side doesn't see it that way.

Please don't tell me the Calgary Flames have a Mark Giordano cap.

Flames should have offered $1M then. The middle would have been only $4.5M

Negotiations are easy!

Yep. Think the flames # is to low and Johnny's camp is to high considering how far into negotiations they are. If i was the flames, i would not pay a penny more than $7.5 on a 7-8 year deal. If i was Johnny i would not sign for a penny less than $7 million on a 7- 8 year deal. The only way the flames are getting Johnny to sign under $7 million is if its less than 7 year term. I personally don't think there is a "Gio cap", but if there is, then that's stupid.

Don't get me wrong, i would love to see Jonny sign a 8 year contract at $6.7 million per. Just don't see that as being realistic.

Ridiculous reply. They are not that far apart now they are in the wheelhouse where the could meet in the middle to satisfy both sides.

Still think the end game here is to follow the "Giordano" cap for the years he is actually on the team and then the last two years Gaudreau makes the market value. Also makes sense since those happen to be Gaudreaus UFA years that you are buying out.

Years 1 - 6: $6.75M
Years 7 -8: $8.5M

Works out to ~$7.2M AAV - which also seems to be pretty fair ground between Johnny's asking price and what the Flames are offering.
