Based on comments made to the media by O'Reilly's camp, I wonder if O'Reilly will be asking the Avs NOT to match???

Sven can ask all he wants, the difference is ROR is basically guaranteed that amount barring a very successful arbitration hearing by the Flames.

If the Avalanche have any intention of matching, wouldn't they do so as soon as possible to get O'Reilly into the lineup? Or will they wait a week just to spite the Flames?
|
That would certainly make the most sense. Conversely, if they don't intend to match, they will wait until the last possible moment to let it be known, to keep him out of the Flames lineup as long as possible.

I don't think they will match, but even if they do it also signifies to the fans and to the rest of the league that our first is available to get get the help we need. Which I am cool with as long as it's another young center. Packages can be made with a first.

More of a hypothetical question: what is League's logic behind such a high price of RFA signing? It gives the team ownership/management no incentive to complete the deal with an RFA in good faith. Why do that, when another team can do all the hard work negotiating with a player and all you have to do is match it or get rich with juicy picks? I struggle to understand the "good side" of this provision.

So that would leave us with a 4th and 6th round pick this year?
I've never felt so frustrated as a Flames fan in my life. I'm so jealous watching these teams with young, homegrown, dynamic players putting in effort, and entertaining the fans night after night. I know I'm doing a bit of right now, but I'm feeling super p'd right now.
|
Oh please. The guy just turned 22, what 21 year olds have put up 50 points? Even without ROR we're not in Jones, MacKinnon, Barkov range.

1.5% - Washington Capitals (from Colorado) - 88 points
1.1% - Buffalo Sabres - 89 points
0.8% - Dallas Stars - 89 points
0.5% - Calgary Flames - 90 points
The Flames probably were going to finish in that 4.7 to .5% range. Sorry, you don't give up on the chance to acquire a player like O'Reilly for those odds.
|
If you keep your first and acquire more by dealing your most productive players, you are increasing your odds by a) having more kicks at the can and b) improving your draft position and probability in the lottery by turning players like bouwmeester into a pick anywhere from 10-30.
Who knows, maybe you have more than 2 firsts and multiple second rounders at the draft after selling off some big ticket players. Maybe your own first is #4 after the lottery. Maybe you can turn one of. Your multiple second rounders and one of your late round firsts to move up to have the third or fifth pick as well as the fourth.
In the end I have no idea whether this particular deal is worth it. I think in general, if you can find a player like o'reilly for a first and a third, I think you pull the trigger. Wat it says about the general course for the franchise is another thing entirely. It's more evidence they do not view the draft as necessary for success and are only interested in contributing roster players and nearly there prospects.
This is shaping up to be another year like the 2010 draft. Should have been sellers, weren't, paid for their mistake by not having a pick until #64.
I really, really hope I am wrong.

If we have a solid enough crop of centres, it won't matter.

This is actually very shrewd.....smart timing on the move.

Baertschi isn't legally owed an offer of a contract that pays him a minimum of $6.5M like O'Reilly will be.

Nobody is guaranteed anything. ROR certainly isn't guaranteed $6.5M, as an RFA or as a UFA. A player can ask for whatever they want, that doesn't mean they'll get it.

No?

Yes, that is the case, but I am not sure why he would reject 6.5 million dollars unless he thought he could sign for more than that or unless he wanted long term security. I would imagine long term security in that case would be at least 7 years, because a 4 year contract is not really worth it when he can get 6.5 million for the next two years and then go UFA.

If O'Reilly is added to the Flames. He would most certainly be on the #1 line and CP can pretty much kill the Flames 1st round draft pick threads

On the one hand you are getting a potentially great center
On the other hand you are definatly giving up a first, you are paying full ticket price from day one so having a young player gains you nothing on the cap, he may not turn out to be as good as he looks or he may turn out to be a recalcitrant ###### bag that walks away or just screws the team for way more money than you really want to pay at every contract. Whatever else this kid turns out to be it is fairly clear loyalty isn't a huge asset of his.
